Once you design your own ships then you will see those designs in the tech tree next time you play that race (when you select individual techs), along with the other techs required for the ship that you don't have at that point.

Early on focus on getting your pop up - have tax rates low to get 100% approval as long as possible, get recruitment centres on every planet you own, and research the pop growth techs before the economy ones. Then focus on the economy branch and also the government branches (and if you have a nice +15% morale tech for a low research cost get that too). All the time make sure you don't get too many factories and labs, and when your money gets low bump your tax rate right up until approval is abou

Ah but what you don't know is that those water tiles happen to either be these small groups of islands which are abundant in natural resources, or special underwater complexes built by some unknown civilization that since abandoned them. Meanwhile that entire continent looks fine from afar, but when you get close you find the land is swarming with carnivorous giant ants which makes it unsuitable for situating any buildings on.

From Bioware forums (sorry if it's already been posted, I didn't have time to read all 11 pages and stopped half way through): There has been a lot of discussion in the past week on how the security requirements for Mass Effect for PC will work. BioWare, a division of EA, wants to let fans know that Mass Effect will not require 10- day periodic re-authentication (this is a revision to their original statement of the copy protection which had a 10-day constant re-authentication

I don't see how 2-3 little flags and a high pitched repetitive noise is an improvement over a screen that showed soldiers and tanks battling it out against each other in battle. It'd be nice if there was an option to revert back to the old battle screen.

I've noticed this as well - my cost for research will stay roughly the same, it may increase slightly over time (e.g. the cost on doom ray starts at ~6k, then goes up to 7k a while later when I next check), and then at some point will have an absolutely massive increase (e.g. it started off at ~6k, ended the game with it nearer 26k I think). This was with the yor without any (race or political party) research bonuses on a small map. As the humans in the campaign I'm also noticing the same proble

A research bonus (my understanding of it anyway) means you get x% more research than without it. So if you would be gaining 100,000 beakers without any bonus, with a 20% bonus you'd get 120,000 beakers. This costs you 120k gold instead of 100k of course, but the bonus is still there. So if you think you'll have a good economy anyway then a research bonus is probably better than an economic one. If you think you'll be struggling to make any money then there's no point getting a research

I've generally found trade income is only useful for diplomacy (i.e. improving how favourably other races view you). It's sad because I think the income should be much much higher than it is so you can actually focus on trade as a strong source of income. Still on small maps I'm getting 3-4 bc per trade route (when the message pops up that is, I've never bothered going and checking how much I'm getting in total), so it could be a bug.

If you're playing with super abilities off that might suggest why the kyrnn do so well - they have by far the best starting race bonuses, and this is usually countered by them having the weakest super-ability (meaning with no super abilities they get a relative advantage over all the other races).

I've been having quite a few problems with crashing as well, more so than with DA. A few times I've crashed when trying to place a spy on an enemy planet (the game crashes when I click on the planet with the 'spy' pointer), and I've also occasionally crashed when doing other things, such as accessing a particular screen on the civilization manager. It doesn't happen too often, but it sure is annoying when it does. I also get the end turn bug a lot when I load an old auto-save (that

I disagree with your assessment of the Yor completely - I've found them to be brilliant economy wise - if I was to sum them up they'd basically be the 'efficient' faction. Their initial buildings have almost no maintenance, while their 1-off research building is amazing. They get a strong population growth, and their economy bonuses are focused in one tech branch which also cuts down on research time. Basically I find they have a very strong early game thanks to their good initial buildings, an

I'm of the exact opposite oppinion - for many of the races it seems that their starting abilities aren't worth much at all, while if you create a custom race you get 5 extra points to spend, and the ability to choose the optimal tech tree+super ability synergy. Take the arceans for example - you get a penalty to speed as your race ability, and nothing amazing as bonuses. In some cases the bonuses are worthwhile of course, such as with the Krynn, but of course in their case it's because they'

I find the korath great fun - one of the most tedious things for me in a game is having the computers military completely destroyed, with my might unchallenged, but having to wait forever for my population on my planets to grow back up far enough to send out a transport ship to take over their planets 1 by 1. I just don't have the patience usually - it's clear I've won, so let me do it a bit faster! With the korath though it's easy. Just build a few spore ships to go along with your mil

Just a quick note on the speed mega-event, I haven't had the (mis?)fortune of receiving it, but if you're the Arceans then a clear benefit of it is it makes it much harder for your enemy to get the first attack against you, since they can't jump out at you from outside sensor range. It also helps a starbase strategy, in that you don't have to have ships at your starbase to stop a super-fast ship coming in and destroying it, but can have them a bit further out (since at 5 speed you'll be able to

How would you classify such a situation (that is, a situation that will increase the chances of such a mega-event)? I mean in my last game that I've just completed I'd have thought I was in such a position, but still no mega event :(. I was playing the altarians with an all-tech strategy, in a tiny galaxy with 3 other AI (on masochistic). The thalans were killed off fairly early when the Yor and Korath ganged up on them, and when the Korath declared war on me (in turn causing the by then sup

The points IMO aren't that well balanced though, meaning such a ranking will be flawed. E.g. I rank universalists as no.1 due to the +25% luck (assuming I'm right in my understanding that weapon rolls are done randomly from (weapon attack*luck) to weapon attack, meaning 50% luck means I deal 50% damage more on average with 50% luck, not to mention the benefit of a reduced range decreasing the scope for a very poor attack. Universalists also have other nice benefits such as economics+pop growth b

What I do: I favour the Arceans almost all the time (super-warrior is so powerful that only 1 or 2 of the others can come even close to challenging it). The thalans come a close second - the hive ability is nice in some situations. After that, it depends on my tactic. Typically though with the Arceans I want +30 weapons, and luck, with my political party being universalits. This means my attack is at near-insane levels and I can wipe out entire fleets without taking a single shot. If I'm

I'm playing the latest version of DA, and am having trouble experiencing any mega events (assuming I'm right in what I perceive to be a mega-event). I've had galactic events that have occorred in my games, such as an increase in all population rates, or a wave of Xenophobia, or a boost to tourism income, but I had all these back with DL anyway. What about the real mega-events people refer to on the forums, that have a massive impact on the game and force you to adapt to them? I've played thro
I have to ask-is there a reason you haven't moved over to DA yet?
I only bought DL, and wasn't sure if I could afford/justify the expenditure on DA. However a week or so ago I went ahead and bought DA, and after a few issues with stardock installation+patches etc. got it working, and having great fun atm. Thanks for the up to date figure on the tax constant - was reviewing my ideal pop figures for DA along with what sort of expenditure per planet I should be looking at to be

My typical strategy: Title: The tortoise and the...tortoise (ok so I don't actually give my strats specific titles :p) Description: Start off focusing on getting as many planets as possible via colony rush (and researching the necessary techs later on for any unclaimed planets). Bleed the treasury until it's empty to sustain a low tax rate (for approval to stay at 100%) to allow you to build a significant population lead over your neighbours.
Normal events will accomplish this. If you want something with more omph then you turn on mega events. We don't need more sliders.
No need for a slider, simply have mega events selectable like the no. of habitable planets, or star clustering, etc., but for mega event extremity. Then those who want extreme mega events can have them, those who want no mega events can have them, and those who want something in between can have them. Since your previously selected option will

Rather than all the suggestions to turn mega-events off completely, would't it be better to just allow players to select the severity of the mega-events on game-statup? That is, instead of an 'either massively unstable mega events or nothing at all' option, having a choice between massively unstable mega events, moderately unstable, and nothing for example, so those players who want a bit of variety+change in tempo can have it without it meaning the end of the game.
