thanks everyone, I think I'll just make it vista compatible, as I have no way to check it all out on xp. Is it just me or do you not have as many things you can change in vista compared to xp?

I'm currently working my way through my first skin. I've got windows vista and I'm obviously working through making sure everything works ok in the vista environment, but I don't have a clue what this thing will look like if installed on xp machine. Am I best just focusing on vista or is there a way of making sure it all works ok on xp. Anyone been through this at all? Will it work fine on both?
You know what I just realised I have the run command at the bottom of my startmenu, and that isn't default in vista and thats pushing the whole lot up! It seems aero just puts it in the blank space at the bottom of menu, but windowblinds just pushes the whole lot up! So glad to have finally worked that out! Makes you realise who flexible your theme actually needs to be!
Yeah good point, looking at something more stretchable now. The only reason I was having it set at actual size was to see what the hell was making it stretch. Its not too many menu items, in aero the menu isnt that tall, it just seems to add blank space at the bottom of start menu for some unknown reason.
Your right its definatly the right hand side. When I tell it not to stretch the left hand side goes to actual size, leaving blank spaces that show the desktop below, but the right has the none stretched image and stretched one underneath, not really sure whats going on there!
Thanks, i didnt know you could animate between the button states, really useful!
Does the size of the item mouseover dictate the size of the menu in anyway?
As you can see its about 1 cm taller than it should be, and as i have text in the background of the start menu (which is probably not a great idea I admit!) it makes it really noticable. I'll have a flick through the tutorials thanks!
Some times when I click 'apply' in skinstudio to test the theme, after the theme has finished loading the skinstudio window goes completely black and the text in the title bar goes all corrupt with a not responding at the end of it. I've tried minimising and maximising the window but that doesnt fix it. But strangely when you got back to your original theme in windows blind it comes back to life again. I'd say it does this about 90% of the time, its not the end of the world, just a bit
What settings would I put in to tell it not to stretch anything? Is that even possible?
Shouldnt be any margin issues, because I'm just adapting a theme thats already been done. Pretty much just painting over the top of the other images. Would it be any of the size measurements in extra settings?
Hi Nearly finished the start menu and taskbar of my first skin, but the start menu keeps stretching a lot taller than it should be. It's not the image size, as its just stretching the image out of proportion. And it's not the amount of items in the start menu as I 've taken it down to the usual amount now. Any ideas? Any words of wisdom from anyone when it comes to making the start menu? All tips welcome! Thanks
Ah now it makes sense! So it just divides what ever size image you load, into the amount of different button states it knows it will need. Thanks guys, really helpfull!
Thanks for your help. Im on the skindstudio 6 (beta I think, it's a little glitchy). So if I did each frame 100px wide and the image 500 wide, the images will virtually be touching each other, how does it know which part of the image is which frame? Can it see that gaps between images, or does it just use the force? At the moment I'm just using one I've downloaded as a template and doing my images inside the exact same place
Can you make the start button a different width? I'd like to do a slightly wider one but I'm new to skining so just picking it up as I go. Another question, how does windows blinds know what part the image to display during different actions? Is it just the gap between the images? Any help welcome, thanks.
Ah, it's starting to make sense now, thanks.
Thanks guys, seems a bit tempermental, for some reason if I make a image the size of my screen it appears only half the size in actually use. So i've made a really long image, which works, but I'm sure it's not really the correct way to do things. Does having large images really slow down the PC noticably?
Hi I'm new to creating my own skin, and I'm having a really hard time skinning my taskbar. Is it not possible to place a large image to run along the taskbar. All I seem to be able to do is either tile a really small section of it, or stretch a small section of it. Both look nothing like the effect I want. Is there a restriction to the size of a image you can use in the taskbar? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? (I can post some images if this doesn't make any
