Btw, concept art is great if you know what you are doing, and most of the 3D packages have some sort of rotoscope option so you can overlay the concepts in your viewports and work directly over them. For absolute beginners, I recommend just playing with the software and/or freestyling, at least until you get a solid feel for the interface and tools.

Btw, it's not true that polycounts no longer matter - I guess people who started that one have top of the line hardware - these are 15 000 quads each, and I have noticeable slowdowns when stress testing them via command console (spawn a lot of them). Well, you can't find everything on the net - for specific textures like that, best to make your own. Fire up Gimp or Photoshop, download a bunch of "base" textures and composite them to your heart's content!
