When DG first came out, I could connect to everyone successfully in custom games. Now I can't. When I try to join a custom game, it says that I am connected to everyone but never joins the lobby; when I try to create one, it says that I am connected to everyone but no one else joins my lobby. I am running Vista x64, with BellSouth DSL (Westell router).

Real-time multiplayer games tend to attract a younger, more competitive crowd. You're not going to get nearly the same sort of calmness and friendliness as in GalCiv's community, or (hopefully) Elemental's. If a 12 year old loads GalCiv, his reaction will probably be "These are some [very bad] graphics," after which he'll close it and never venture onto its forums. Perhaps, if you're lucky, he'll comment on a forum somewhere that "galciv sux lol." Unfortunately for the

Heart of Life as it stands is a brutal item. I use it on every demigod, even Sedna (who theoretically shouldn't need it that much). I have a relatively simple idea to make it more balanced: require that the user be near a friendly tower (of light/darkness). This can be visually justified by having the health stone "channel" energy through a chain of towers. This will make it more of a midgame item, since in the late game most towers are gone; it will make it hard

It's never going to go 9:1 because of a cooler effect. :) That said, even in the case of something like that, the skills should be tweaked. If Ba is being used 9:1 that means that Bb, Bb1, and Bb2 were wasted development time. That has to be weighed by the devs, of course. This is not intended to be an automatic, emergent system. Think about it like this: if the statistics I posted are based on 1,000 games, that means that these techs were chosen...</

Well, interpretation is always the problem with statistics, DeCypher. There are a few possibilities in the example I gave: The tech itself may be imbalanced. A descendant tech may be imbalanced. The tech may be necessary to access a flexible branch of the techology tree. The imbalance may exist, but be intentional. Case 1 should be easy to diagnose. It would exhibit itself as a tech with a high selection rate across seve

It's not a question of finding the "slightly sub-optimal" paths and weeding those out. Those are the lifeblood of an interesting gaming experience. Instead, think about a tech which occurs in 90% of won games. This is a tech which is dangerously close to "necessary." It might simply be foundational, like researching "Alphabet" in Civ IV, but it might also be a truly off-the-wall spell that is simply too strong. This can occur even without the players realizing th

For the Betas, I think it would be a good idea if you implemented "postgame dumps." Essentially, these would be XML files containing information on technologies researched, spells used, items bought and the like. They could be parsed to provide statistics: individual technologies could be correlated with final scores, short/long games, and the like. If 95% of winners are taking, say, Earth Magic, this would provide valuable balancing information instead of relying on a

Stardock's Impulse is the main competitor to Steam. Wouldn't it be a bit odd to release it on the competitor's product?

For those of you complaining about port forwarding--you have to do it with consoles too. It's a requirement of the Internet, not of the game. Granted, I think that a server-to-client paradigm could work fine with Demigod, which would solve some of the issues; it would just require more of a server than most RTS games do, something more on the lines of FPS servers. Would people pay $30/month or so for external servers for a RTS game?

[quote who="mickeko" reply="7" id="2138092"] Quoting The Jooma, reply 1Not in the industry I see. When it comes to PC Gaming, developing a game means developing for multiple hardware configurations. Bluntly, if people can't play your game, they won't buy your game. And although the truly "hardcore" may go out and upgrade their system to play a certain game, the money is in the mainstream, and they will not. That's why. And that's why PC gaming is slowly dropping out from mainstream,

Honestly. If it takes them until the weekend to get the servers to work correctly, what of it? It's two days you have to wait. This might not have happened if the game hadn't been sold several days before it was supposed to be. Just be patient.

Make sure that you've chosen the option to "turn off unsafe services." Using Hamachi as a LAN means that if you are sharing anything on a network it will be visible to the people on the VPN unless you instruct Hamachi to block this functionality!

The NAT facilitator is a piece of the software used to negotiate connections, Odeus. They're unhappy with it--not with the users who are having problems.

28 Replies 80,901 Views

If you set up a Hamachi VPN, you can use Demigod's LAN feature to connect to each other. I played several games last night using this. It's not a perfect solution--you'll need friends to play with, for one thing--but until GPG has time to get the netcode issues straightened out it serves well enough as a stopgap.

It has been clear from the beginning that this is a multiplayer-centric game. Why didn't you research that beforehand instead of buying it and then complaining?

[quote who="beemer127" reply="7" id="2141005"]Yeah, I've been trying to log in all night. No dice. I can log into impulse, I can even see the game as being registered to my account, but I can't log in. If impulse servers are really that bogged down, it seems to me they didnt adequately prepare. I know it's not my firewall, and I know it's not a port forwarding issue. The sad part is, the game is just lame without multiplayer, which is a huge disappointment to me, as I w
