I tend to start with a Mothership and half a dozen disciples, use them to colonise a couple of lightly defended worlds, then tech up to Illums and add either a carrier or a battleship. Next step on the hostility side is Guardians. A couple of them does wonders for your survivability.

I should really know this, given that I've played several games as Advent now, but if Illums are anti-capitals, what's the most efficient Advent counter to light frigates? Disciples? Fighters?
Repair towers. I can't stress this enough. Three repair towers will multiply the effectiveness of your defences exponentially. My standard defense for front line planets (as Advent) is three repair towers, two (maybe three) hangars and five or six beam platforms. Against AI, this will decimate anything short of a full attack fleet, and against a human it will certainly buy you time to get your fleet there, which should be your main defence anyway.
No issues with Vista 32bit and an 8800GTX. This is a computer which crashes out of a lot of games (eg Forged Alliance, Crysis), often because of an overheated GPU (increasing fan speed to 100% helps). Sins has been rock solid.
The Peggle level ending with fireworks and Ode To Joy would be cool.
"Killing capital ships is so easy in various ways it surprises me so many people focus so much of their fleet supply on them. " Shield regen, disable and Cleansing Brilliance rilliance, baby.
Really helpful. Thanks guys.
Sorry if this is addressed elsewhere - I have looked through the forum. In the absence of a proper BSG mod, I'd love to replace some of the default voices with clips from Battlestar Galactica (so phase jump becomes FTL, fighters become Vipers etc) . Nothing more than that at this stage. How do I go about doing this?
Dude, you're attacking flaks with a single type of ship, the very type they're designed to counter. What do you expect to happen? Bring some direct fire ships along, take out the flaks then launch your strike craft.
