Brad, how can that be? I can understand that in a starting position on the edge; but in the middle I generally find that I need to go in two directions at least. I do end up pushing my colony ships always to the end of range -- frequently choosing range rather than PQ. The most effective use I find at the start for the survey ship is: go for those hunks of rock! Free ships are a big deal in the early game, less so later. ~SDC~

Brad, I think you should take it as a compliment. It's like the time I baked a great fresh pumpkin pie. My guests (including my sister) repeatedly said: "No way you baked that pie! You must have cheated!" People have a hard time believing that the AI can be as challenging as it is without cheating. What's great is that it's like being beaten in chess. With enough study, you can figure out what the AI did and then use it in your next game. ~SDC~

Hey, come on. The guy just was frustrated by being clobbered by a random event. Legitimate to react, even if he didn't use the best taste. The problem's been patched. Original poster says he's grateful. No reason to speculate that the guy's immature, or a pirate. What's next? That he's an Al-Qaeda agent? ~SDC~

I don't know that this answers all your questions, but I found this in the GalCiv Unofficial FAQ: Does the Ai cheat? At levels below Intelligent it receives less than a human from taxes. At Intelligent it receives the same. Above it gets more. Also, the AI knows where all the yellow stars are, but this is explained in the backstory as they traveled the stars much longer than humans. #7 by Diplomat Louis-guy reid - 3/29/2003 7:25:58AM Here is a report of Brad's comments on

I think the way to do this is to go to the individual planet, click the details tab at the lower left, and then set to a different governor. ~SDC~

I'm having problems understanding this -- I've never run into anything like it. I keep tax rate around 50%, make the appropriate planetary upgrades (entertainment networks and stadiums), gather the appropriate morale boosters in tech and from anomolies, and I never go that low, except on new planets. You say your tax is at 0%? How can that be? ~SDC~

Just noticed in the current game, when I-League forms, in the Diplomacy box under background it gives a "String Not Found" for the I-League. All other minors show proper background. ~SDC~

If not mentioned before, I'd like a way to locate a nonoccupied planet by name. I got a random event describing a quality 35 planet, but I can't find the darn thing! ~SDC~

Yes, you should. Under the "Software" tab are four individual modules for download. One is the manual. One thing though -- the manual is in a hard-to-read font. On another thread, someone's discussing converting it to a Word file. The documentation is not excellent, but feel free to look through the discussions and to post lots of questions. ~SDC~

This used to bother me until I realized the easy way to handle it. You will be taken to the planetary screen at the start of the turn after you complete a build. In the lower right will be the icon for the ship. Click and it'll leave orbit. No more hunting around. I like having ships stay in orbit; I often want defense ships and transports doing exactly that. ~SDC~

50 years old. Like others, I started with the classics -- AH's Tactics II, Waterloo, Stalingrad, Afrika Corps -- went through college addicted to Strategy & Tactics and Diplomacy -- got involved in the development of the RPG RuneQuest. Oh, and been hopelessly addicted to computer gaming since the first Zork. Hey, if any of you fellow geezers want to pull out the old stuff, there's ways to play AH titles by email ... ~SDC~

I have been enjoying the beta of GalCiv for several months, and also enjoy MOO3. I hope that you enjoy GalCiv. In terms of learning curves, I think most of GalCiv is pretty intuitive to those familiar with Civ-type games, but there's a great deal of subtlety. The learning curve in GalCiv, IMHO, is in learning the alternative ways to play -- and of deciding what style suits you best.

I've been playing the various betas of GalCiv for months now and greatly enjoy the game. I've been playing MOO3 since it came out and greatly enjoy it as well. I simply want to say that the excellence of GalCiv is, IMHO, completely independent of whether one likes/hates/doesn't have MOO3. They are different gaming experiences and each should be evaluated on its own merits. Incidentally, let me go on record as saying that I take NO credit for GalCiv's excellence. A bunch of other fol
