First of all, I really like the idea of min-expansions. Thx. What I'd like to see are a few improvements to the interface. 1. I'd love to be able to freeze the Empire Tree instead of having it bounce around while I'm trying to select. Perhaps holding down 'Ctrl'? 2. Instead of being random, I'd like to be able to choose the universe background colour. Some backgrounds lack sufficient contrast during the day. 3. A "Quicksave" button. 4. Lastly, a "quick

Not to sound condescending or mean spirited, but PLEASE New Players, go through the HUGE number of excellent posts in the strategy section. Just about every question you could think has already been answered. Evilbones, and every other new player, I suggest doing this until you start winning. 1. Select "Medium Random" map 2. Go to game options and select "Locked Teams". This will disable Diplomacy. Also select "Pirates Inactive". No pirate attacks. Now you can concentr
Going with this line of thought, does it then make more sense to expand out in a straight line
Not necessarily, as planets closest to your homeworld will have a higher allegiance than those father way and therefore higher income, thus higher trade bucks. Also, you probably colonized them earlier so they will have a higher population. Depending on your race and how many of a certain type of planet you have, you may be better off researching higher population caps

At the start of the game, I usually bypass planets with just the Mother and colonize asteroids towards the enemy, until I have my LRMs up and running. This has 2 advantages: 1. I don't have to build civic labs, just military. 2. I get close the the enemy a lot quicker. When i get the chance, I'll build the civic labs and a colonizer frigate with a second fleet of LRMs and colonize the planets.

I'm left-handed so I bound all the keys to the numpad. For me, it dramatically improves my performance. However, I have 2 problems: 1. Some of the fleet commands (especially retreat)and auto commands (such as scout-auto autoexplore) don't work. 2.I wish the Alt key could be rebound. When using the numpad, my thumb has trouble reaching it.

Good thread. I'd just like to add a couple of things: 1. When setting up the AI, the type of opp ( aggressor, researcher, etc) can make a big difference in the difficulty of the game. 2. Size matters. I like playing small fleets and fast everything else as I find it easier to learn how to use support abilities. However, Vasari, for example, seems to be at a disadvantage when using small fleets.

Yea, autocasting can be a real hassle, especially if I'm sending a unit from the factory directly into a battle where I don't autocasting turned on. Its 1 more thing to micro. I wish there was a way to set the autocasting default from "enabled" to "disabled".
The only thing you can do to stop insurgency is to destroy all TEC factions on the map.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but all you'd really have to do is destroy Civilian Research Stations. If the opp. doesn't have 8 online, he won't be able to generate rebels.

I'm closing in on 55. I've been playing since I sold Texas Instrument 99/4a comps in 1980. There was a game called "Tunnels of Doom" which I'm sure Blizzard must have got their Diablo concept from. My 47 year old brother still plays it.

I thought of giving a big preamble about where I'm coming from, tastes, etc, but the hell with it. The Witcher. I haven't experienced such a thrill since Diablo_1.

Hi Tom, I'm from North Vancouver. I started playing SotSE in late January. I generally avoid playing a new game online until I know the game well. Also, to give the Devs a chance to iron out the kinks. So,after playing the AI for 3 months, reading posts on strategy, downloading and watching recommended replays, and making sure I could host(BitDefender security is very SotSE friendly), I took the plunge. As of last night, I'm 5-3 of of 12. Not bad. A
