Turned out to be the best game ever made in my opinion. Noone (except me) seems to remember that now I picked up Civ IV on launch. Only issues i remember were OOS that occasionally popped up on multiplayer, and a performance issue they eventually fixed. Then again, no one in their camp claimed these issues weren't issu

Hi all, On launch the game was immediately crashing to desktop. I figured out the problem after some troubleshooting. I use ATI tray tools to do a refresh rate lock to 85hz. I'm one of those holdouts with a CRT (albeit a 22.5" widescreen CRT). Running anything but 85hz requires fixing geometry and other issues, so staying at 85hz is important. ATI tray tools seems to be the only utility that does this well. Once I shut down ATI tray tools, the g
I still didn't see an answer as to why the guy who got the game new couldn't play it from the disc. It smacked of DRM - activation required - exactly the thing I hate about DRM. Any word yet on why he couldn't simply install and play it from the disc? Or does the game truly require Impulse activation?
Question: I saw the guy with the thread who bought the game early and couldn't play. I'm just curious - if there is no activation with Impulse, why couldn't he play the game in single-player mode out of the box? This seems at odds to the no-DRM premise of this thread.

No. If he bought the game but cannot play it because it's the 22nd and not the 24th then what is preventing him for playing is DRM.
That's kind of what I was wondering
The box version has no activation or copy protection (so you can play it right out of the box), however for multiplayer and updates you need to use Impulse. However, you don't need to have Impulse running (or even installed) at the time you run the game. Basically, Impulse is just for getting updates and, so you can access the multiplayer servers, validating that you have purchased a legitimate copy of the game. Best regar
I just want to make sure I'm clear here. I'm talking single player only here. Right now, the game requires an install of Impulse and a one-time call home to activate, correct? I'm not happy about that - one of the reasons that I normally refuse to buy games that need to call home somewhere to verify that I really own it and can install it. Will this requirement vanish with the archival DVDs or via patch later?
I don't dislike Steam - but I do not like having a game that requires a call home to some remote server to authenticate if you really own and have the right to use the product. To me, you do not own this product- you are simply renting it until the company that runs the servers crash or goes out of business (it could happen - look at the financial market last year - so much for bulletproof companies). This also kills your ability to sell the game, which is my biggest com
