The best bet is to use the "hold/grav well/local area" tactics as they cover the three basic things your ships need to be doing.

It was a random large size map. I ended up baiting them in after a culture bomb. Then I skipped the planet in question and jumped to one of the system "arms" and started taking a couple planets. This effectively split the teams from making a 2x large armada to come after me. I had to pretty much wait until I was at max fleet size to do it though :( It was a lot of waiting and building with no action.

Thanks KillerSOS. I've almost got it up on a game at home but I'm currently at work. Some follow up questions: 1. Is RA returns based on ship deaths or does it just regularly clock in "new" ships to your fleet? 2. Is there a time frame of ship deaths in which a single gate would phase in a certain amount of new ships? What I mean is: A)if 5 ships die in a single minute does RA bring those 5 ships in over time or do I need five gates? B) Do the 5 ships get added to a "p

I'm on a huge map and i've got about 30 planets. I researched RA and every once in a while when I loose ships RA gives me new ones (usually carriers ugh) at assorted planets with phase stabilizers. At least I think it's the PS that they are being sent to. The problem on a large map is lag. I also hate having to wheel my mouse so much. So I was thinking I'd scuttle all my phase stabilizers and place 1-2 at each planet 1-2 deep along my frontier. I was wondering however, if I have

IMPORTANT 1.1 PREVIEW LEAK When the version is upgraded... 1) You will need to download and install it. 2) Where a previous version was listed in the game information, 1.1 will now be the listed version. 3) You MAY be able to order pizza during play because that is what made Everquest II GREAT! It will be SPACE PIZZA. That is to say it is a freeze dried pizza. If you don't have a re-hydrator like in Back To the Future II: You're screwed!

Does the + button go faster than "fastest" in the options when setting up a game? Cuz I always set it to fastest speed for everything. I thought that was the limit. I wasn't complaining about speed, just recognizing how some people could see that as "slow". There were plenty of things I could have done to increase my position during that time. It was closing in on my time to leave the house so instead I built up a choke point. I then took the shower while I nuked the guy :P It was quic

A lot of wonderful ideas here. Some of my own and some opinions about things I'd like that other people have previously mentioned. 1. Moons - If implemented should rotate around the planet and have their own grav well. - The grav wells always touch and slightly overlap. If a ship is caught in the overlap it slows down 90% for a few seconds. - Phase lanes may be occluded by the moon and it's gravity well. Basically any ship jumping in would end up on the furthest point influ

With games, as with movies you have to suspend any rational idea of what's going on. We're talking about alien races, ships that shoot and don't manuever much (except strikecraft), super futuristic humans etc. The simple idea that there is a a single space ship pretty much goes against everything we have now. I did manage to take a shower while 5 caps took out a 6k planet. I clicked a few offered CF's from the AI before heading out. With only 3bar ships at my chokepoint I was suprised I

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to try a blockade run first. I set the game on a relatively big map but small fleets. All this did of course was set the supply level on ships larger, the AI still rolls in gigantic fleets. I might toy with a scout or two and see what I can manage though. It was wrong to put small fleets in a big setting but heck...I like the challenge!
SpacePony-It's not that you're fat or Weight Challenged - you just have a thyroid infection.
I had a WoW arena team made up with prot warriors aptly named "Fat Chicks on the Dance Floor". The name didn't fit to well so I had to kill the spaces :P "Fatchicksonthedancefloor" All I have to say to GM's who ban names like mine is: The whole room feel silent The girls all pasued wit glee Turned left, turned right All they lookin at me But I w

Holy cow! I didn't know about waypoints! I'm still on AI because I'm learning the ins and outs of each race. That's a lot of awesome advice. Thanks for the advice!

I'm just throwing this out there. I was frustrated for about a week at how crappy the explore button on scouts worked. I would wait for them to phase in and reclick. This mean't a lot of extra zooming. If I didn't watch my scouts they'd die in a single jump! What I didn't realize is that you can just right click the explore button on the scout to turn the explore button into an autocast! So yeah...I felt dumb. It was problably mo

Fludlerk I believe the Vasari scout ships have a second ability that let them capture "neutral minerals". This only works in uncolonizable areas such as asteroid fields. TEC and Advent use Colony frigs, but they're vulnerable and the recharge rate is so slow they're only worth a planet or two in the beginning. Usually I have a small fleet with an extra colonizer cap floating around behind my main fleet that I use for defense/attacks behind enemy lines and any neutral planets I come alo

Alright so I'm in a massive 10 player FFA with 9 AI. 6 are normal and 3 are hard. I'm at a point where neither fleet and possibly both can not get past a chokepoint I've set up. The problem is that they've got a cease fire agreement and are babysitting the planet just beyond me. They each want me to kill the other too. It's ironic that they won't just vamouse because I obviously want to get in that system. Both of the AI at this point are agressive if I jump i

I think it splits if you have multiple cap ships but I'm not sure if it's 50/50 for say..2 ships. If you have 1 cap then it should get all experience for all kills in it's grav well. This is easy to check. Just hover the mouse over your cap ship during any small engagement where you aren't doing any micro and can track who kills what. It may pay to keep the cap far away from the action.

Playing vs. two hard AI last night, I built a Novalis and got insta attacked by two huge swarms of bad guys. I fought well for the planets for about an hour before switching it off cuz it got boring. I recognized a big mistake when I let the bounty slip...what crippled one of the two sieged planets was the extra pirates that came in with the red team. They each came from a different side of the planet. I would suggest that later in the game if you want to save the credit dump that you t

That's very true. The use of upgrades can be used in a situational advantage. With two fleets of 6 you can only add power to 1 by adding another ship. The upgrade might net you two territories whereas the ship only gives you one.

Excellent post. More support for mixed fleets. The game gets more intelligent when you add versatility. I too am against micro to much. I think of myself as the admiral, not the pilot or even a battleship commander. I've only had the game for a few weeks but I did notice some odd things about ship casting. Since then, I've ceased to use such upgrades on ships like cobalts which has made them essentially "not used". Given mid game AI uses a lot of support cruisers adding cobalts into the

I'm still somewhat of a beginner and my experience is limited to AI. I can beat two hard and I'm working on 3 hard. 1) If you factor a 5% increase in damage, then you need to have at least 20 of a single type of ship to get an increase of 1 ships worth of damage. At that point it's a cost analysis of the upgrade vs. the new ship. If you have a small mixed fleet, then you're only boosting one portion of your fleet. A new ship or a defensive upgrade are better in this case. 2) Ea

I've used all fighters for a few games. They're fairly effective. I'm not to worried about caps bombing my planets (unless it's a Marza) when the AI has 5-6 bombers going at it. Recently I've been doing 1 bomber/1 fighter per hanger with mixed results. I'm going to switch it to 2 hangers 3 fighters 1 bomber. Vs. AI you find an awful lot of frigs and carriers making fighters more ideal in many situations. To bad there isn't a flak turrent...

These are nice suggestions. I haven't played online but I have logged on to the main app. I would suggest if greyed out players/games are going that a timer be added next to the name if they are in a timed game (if timed games are added). That way if you see a friend and he's going to be out in 5 minutes you'll be willing to wait around to chat/play with him.
