I have tried this, but that changes nothing - still extremly slow movement. It also makes it very difficult to hit the right end position for the ship!.

I have a problem with extremely slow ship movement playing on Insane map with 8 AI opponents – no pirates. I own some 62 colonies and have a lot of ships on the map. When I want to execute at movement the game stops a few seconds and start to move the ship in one or two steps each taking some time. No smooth movement. It helps to zoom in close but not much. If I switch to the next 'Idle Ship" while first ship is moving, the game hangs while the first ship stutters
