Hey, I've been having a very similar problem, with the demo. I changed the details in prefs.ini as you described. But that just means the black square fills the screen lol.

[SOLVED] Gal Civ II Gold demo won't run. in Bug Reports GalCiv2 Forums

I've certainly got a machine capable of running the demo. And this isn't a common problem - yet googling doesn't seem to throw up someone with the same issue. I tried a reinstall but no joy. Basically I go to run the program and all I get is a large black square in the upper left of the screen.... Thanks for your help.
