In and amongst the statements made in Frogboy's thread regarding the Old Guard and New Blood, was some interesting statements that sounded much like stuff our parents used to say like "When I was your age I had to walk 20 miles to school in knee deep snow uphill both ways". While this is understandable pride in the accomplishments of pioneer skinners that have brought skinning to the popularity it is today it seems also to illustrate a duality in the mindset of many skinners. The first

paxx You have a point there. Debate does imply winner/loser, discussion merely affords an opportunity to express ones views without the pressure of scoring debating points. I just felt that it needed to be said that people who express opinions in public forums like this shouldn't be surprised or offended when someone rebuts them. That's usually how flame wars start. Typical msg board debate on some sites : "I believe blah" "I believe opposite of bla

This debate/discussion on the differences between debates and discussions misses the point. Simply calling something a discussion does not relieve the participants of the need to form logical, cogent arguments nor does it change the meanings of opinions, preferences etc. It simply relaxes the rules regarding the formalities of how arguments are presented. Even crea's referenced definition of discussion, descibes it as an informal form of debate.

Anyone who feels the need to express an opinion should be ready to defend it and not be insulted when somebody calls them on it. I never take it personally if someone disagres with me, if I did I'd be an emotional basket case. I do get angry when people feel they should attack me instead of my position. That is the height of intellectual laziness and a common tactic on many of these sites. That is the point, I thnk, of what Brad expressed above. Besides, usually when I debate I am

The problems I see with many people and the art of debate is: 1. No one taught them how. 2. The self-esteem guru's who say everyones opinion is valid. The problem with the first is obvious. The problem with the second is that those same gurus do not teach the difference between opinion, preferences, and fact. Everyone has opinions, many of them valid, many of them in polar opposition to the opinions of others. All opinions _are_ valid as long as they can't be contradic

There's a listserver http://wuzzle.org/list/litstep.php You can subscribe there. Then ask a bunch of questions so all of us can look smart answering them Everybody is pretty eager to help.

Phar0e; Just read that on LS List, great move. Griffinme; That used to be a very common practice for older themes and a small number still do it. It is possible to convert just about any theme to OTS. As a matter of fact there is someone on the LS list that is undertaking the enormous task of converting all themes (~5000) to OTS. I usually do it before I run a theme, keeps it neat and tidy <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/smile.gif" border=0 ALIGN=

I'll admit, OTS is not for everyone, especially seasoned themers. It does restrict some of the things you can do. But it is the easiest way, IMHO, for new users to get started. In my cse I'm glad I didn't have OTS when I started. Heck, the first time I tried Litestep I scared the hell out of myself when I thought I killed my computer (the old Reinstall windows error). But I just had to have D'mer's Polymer skin running on my machine and NextStart dragged my system down to a crawl.

Personal opinion... the third party builds are the direct result of the dev team cloistering themselves. Given the general low morale of the users due to several coders leaving, and the lack of visible activity or interaction by the dev team it was inevitable that a few of the more active/creative individuals would try to "keep things moving". The other problem I think the dev team will run into is that no matter what .24.7 looks like, no one will be satisfied due to the perceived "bac

If I understand the question correctly, it customary for themers to set the desktop area to leave about a 4 pixel edge around maximized programs so there is a small area of the desktop exposed that you can right-click on it and get to the popup. You still have to click though, bumping alone won't do it. You can also get to the popup by hitting the Windows key, the popup will show up wherever your mouse is located. Regarding the wharf, hardly anyone uses them anymore (myself included)

OTS = Open Theme Standard. It's a structered approach to themeing Litestep and is a kind of distro spec. You can learn about it at http://www.beyondconvention.net/ohussain/ots/index.htm

It might be worthwhile if sometime in the future there was a check box or boxes, such as those found when uploading a Windowblinds skin, to indicate OTS, LSDistro (although I think this approach is dying), or non-standard. I follow the OTS particularly on this site because it is heavily populated by potential new users of LS and OTS is the easiest way to become aquainted with Litestep.

Emily, First, most of the snotnoses in that forum wouldn't have the courage to say in person what they say under the cover of anonymity, so I don't know if the analogy is apt. But that aside, its the ignore-them-and-they'll-go-away attitude that has caused them to become what they are. They have to keep escalating their outrage until someone has to notice in order to inflate their low self esteem. Not that I think that there are unibombers in that crowd, but they are a bunch of bomb

Avid Litestep user here. Did wonders for stability in Win98SE when properly tweaked. Works well with WB. I usually do a WB skin for my Litestep themes to give my desktop a unified look. Its not plug and play like NextStart, you have to enjoy customizing, but it has a lot less overhead.

Jafo I wasn't at skinz.org long enough to get a feel for the place, but when it went down and ls.net started having its difficulties I ran here. Regarding the maturity angle, you and I alone bring the average age here way up

With all the jerks that populate skin sites (and you all know the type I'm talking about), Customize is the only one I have found that actually hires them as admins. I'd call their behavior childish, but that would be an insult to children everywhere. I would delete my stuff, but the "manage uploads" link doesn't work, or maybe it does
