Well, IIRC, in DA each base can give +2 and there is a limit of 4 bases per quadrant. Putting the rendezvous nexus near a corner allows 4 quadrants, each with 4 bases, each with +2 gives a total of +32 for a one-time boost. With good miniaturization, 3000 invaders can be made fairly cheaply to have 11 or 12 speed. Higher is possible, of course, but the invasion transports are one-use disposables, so mine usually end up at 11 or 12. You can extend the range slightly b

Keep in mind how the "Neutral Space" UP Treaty can affect you. That is, any ships in what becomes enemy space will get teleported to a boundary. The only exception appears to be ships in orbit around a planet, even if that planet is "behind enemy lines". This, in turn, means that defenders set to "Guard" at mining starbases will also be thrown out of enemy space. (And even bases with lots of modules lose most battles.) In one game, I had three&n

I had a similar experience. Go to an earlier save and check the victory progress screen - the one that shows the Influence %, etc. It will say if the Research Victory is Disabled or not. (Can you do that in a Metaverse game?) After I lost that above-mentioned game, I always go to that screen on Turn 1, to confirm that Research Victory has in fact been disabled. I had probably goofed and forgotten that time, but i take no chances anymore.

Thank you, CraigHB! :-) There have been some who claim that the US should have let a high-level delegation witness a nuke bomb test and that they would then have convinced the Japanese military to surrender. I have always regarded that as one of the most preposterous assertions ever committed. The real and feasible alternatives facing the US and Allies and Japan in Summer 1945 were pretty much what i stated - - horrible, all of them. One should never

YAQW! A couple general weapons notes: 1) In the early stages, defenses beat weapons as long as they are the same family. (Armor for guns, shields for beams, and AA for missiles) The balance shifts around mid-game, as the weapons get stronger and the hulls get able to mount more of them. One way to extend that period some is not to place engines in defender ships, and put defenses in the free-ed up spaces. 2) Keep track of

In my experience, the Drengin tend to fade as the game continues. They neglect expansion and infrastructure, in comparison to other AIs and the human player. As long as you research some diplo fairly early, you can simply bribe them to declare war on another AI you're concerned with as a threat.

Wow! What a very different game! Nicely done. I have not played DL. I do not think DA even has 800% and 1000% bonus tiles. One thing, though, is that some of the "old hands" have stated that the number of bonus tiles is based on (IIRC) galaxy size. Thus, the fewer the inhabitable planets, the more each planet will have. So, it was not so much that the AIs got lucky, as that you were very, very unlucky!

On the nuclear part, you're mostly correct. The problem is concentration, of course. That is, a few molecules at a time over some years of aresenic will not poison you, but a cupful at once is lethal. The nuclear industry concentrates the stuff a great deal. IIRC, a mine will process about a ton of ore to get 5 pounds of uranium - that's something like 400 to 1. So, using gross numbers here, 10,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel was originally distributed in 4,000,00

The_Butcher - Let me separate your remarks into two categories: opinions and assertions of fact. You have ever right to your opinion on what might happen in the future, and everyone has opinions, sobeit. Your assertions of fact, though, contained flaws and mistakes, and it was to those that i directed my remarks. First, no one died from the TMI accident. There was no rad release to the environment of any significance whatsoever. So, your initial all

You have provided no evidence of anything. I certainly do not regard that document as anything but what it is, the actual surrender document dated September 2, 1945. As for age and that other stuff you said, I've many times embraced the revision of history when new facts and evidence have been presented. The code stuff (such as ULTRA) only became declassified many decades after the war ended. The knowledge from those documents led to considerable revisions to previou

Sadly, nuclear lost another chance to save lives on 9/11 as it had at Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the planes hit the Twin Towers instead of nuclear plants. Instead of dead hijackers + dead passengers + 1000s dead in and around the Towers, it would have been dead hijackers + dead passengers + a few dozen plant workers. The analogy of the few dozen plant workers perishing instead of thousands in NYC, like those 200K died at H + N instead of perhaps 10 million is sound, and

Wow. I wonder how that much hemp would be processed and the energy distributed? But, that's not why I'm posting into this thread. 1) Nuclear waste. Except for the used fuel, nearly all the radioactive stuff decays in a few to a few dozen years. Any rad stuff that decays to normal background (and remember natural uranium and thorium start radioactive) is just a simple matter of containment storage, nothing else. As for the longer-live

The GOOD news about the Jagged Knife is that they DO have all the techs all the races have. Thus, every planet you capture might give you a captured tech, and no AI minds that you are at war with the JK. If you can make the JK surrender, you can often make them yield lots of techs for the peace treaty.

I've not played DL, just DA. Is this the Jagged Knife event? I though the Pirates event was just fleets of marauding warships, sort of like the Peacekeepers event. I did not know they also took planets!

I have mostly stopped getting the OOM crashes in DA (I frequently use all factories). I went to the Options page and zeroed or minimized every display option for details. Here is one old thread: https://forums.galciv2.com/356836 and https://forums.galciv2.com/362173

charon - The AIs do seem to be required to build scout ships and deploy them. Thus, the devs did mitigate that AI advantage considerably, as human players do not waste time and resources on scout ships and simply scout with colony ships and/or constructors. Also, a player can "upgrade" one to the other in place when a juicy opportunity is encountered - - the AIs do not do that. EDIT: Here's one of those earlier thread: <a href="h

Since you mentioned different tech trees per race, you must be playing TA. I play DA and not Metaverse, so I will limit my comments to one aspect. One way I have found to better monitor many colonies is by making heavy use of the Colonies spreadsheet page. There, in one place, I can see for all my comony planets the unbuilt squares count, the population, all the types of production, what is being built, and the completion time, and even if there is a ship in orbi

charon2112 - The AI does know where every planet and resource anomaly is from the start. There have been many threads on this, with several players recounting their playtesting of it. At one point, a player found a juicy planet in a corner, and staked it out much like a hunter might tether a goat and lay up in a hunter blind when trying to kill a marauding tiger. The player put sensor-equipped ships or bases on the approaches, and parked a colonizer adjac

Otterbear - Look at the enemy ships in the viewscreen, maybe write down their stats, then look at your own ships in the viewscreen, then compare the stats. If you post those numbers here in this thread, you may get some more suggestions, especially if you add the weapons and defense types. In case I made a wrong assumption, when I said "nameplate" value for, say, offense, I meant the stats from the design. For example, if an enemy ship had four 25-point
