Book 1 of the campaign should teach you everything you need to know. Also, the game is rife with tool tips if you take the time to mouse over the options. Will it update automatically through impulse?
Click on the city that they're in. Select them from the unit list. Click on another town you want to start a Trade Route with.

He can be a "tradiationl" wizard (I.E. wizard hat, staff, long beard, etc) but still be one of emense power. They are different concepts.
He could be a human mage that reached an emense level of power. A higher enough level to challenge the DemiGods for Godhood. Flavor issues solved.
