Hmm, thanks for the tip galacticdoom. In all of my games so far, the Altarians have had the silly habit of buying lots and lots of troop transports, but not even researching the laser! I guess this is to do with their personality? (not to mention the countless other civilizations who declare war on the arceans before they even have a ship with a particle beam)

Meh, in the first game I played pirates spawned and destroyed my military (even my swarm of elite small fighters ;_;), but they also wiped out the Arceans and their level 30 medium sized cruisers and what have you. After losing a lot of my new, large sized destroyers, I finally realised that armour is very important. I then switched my military from lasers to missiles, and added lots of deflectors (my pirates were using lasers and deflectors), and then completely wiped them out, as well as al
