banned for unfair evaluation of human excrement, which contains useful quantities of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous, and hydrocarbons. comparisons to car salesman and bankers are completely unwarranted.
So a planet can initially cost more science than it produces

Your implementation makes sense if resources are global, as they are said to be in Crusade.
Oh, I think I understand what you meant. When you said, "cost more science than it produces", I am assuming now that you meant the total output of the colony would in that case be zero, not ac

Hm.. so Big Fabulous Science Planet, instead of working full-out on the Death Ray mk IV, would have to siphon off some resource because the scientists on Planet Crap need help figuring out how to combat a persistent local virus that eats electrical wiring, and also the stink in summer when the native cricket population dies off would kill a bantha from 50 paces, can we maybe genetically engineer a less smelly one, and why in Dog's name did we ever colon

There's a lot of AI out there that can fairly easily be reduced to a balance sheet of + and - items for things like attitude and decision making. Once you learn what goes in what column, gaming the AI becomes reasonably straightforward. Even some of the better games out there, like Pandora:First Contact, which has had some fantastic AI work done on it (shout out to Ail / Alexander Stumpp!) and plays quite well, falls into this category.

In almost all games I've ever played with tech brokering allowed -- aside from being a royal PITA as a player to keep on top of tech trades -- it tends to stratify the civs into layers, and these layers tend to separate. Civ4 recognized this and had a VERY handy overview so that you could, with one F-key, check the status of all other civs vis a vis tech trade opportunities. e.g. 4 civs around the same tech end up brokering/sharing/buying tech f

erischild is right on the money. My two cents on tall vs wide: The weird non-linear pop growth is by far the biggest factor against tall empires right now. Spreading out magnifies your pop growth in a patently rediculous fashion -- excepting the Yor, who really do 'suffer' from linear pop growth, in that a small, low pop world will take forever to make more Yor (trust me, this is a major PITA to playing the Yor vs any other rac
I really think that just eliminating the over-lapping stacking effect of economy starbases would go a long ways to cutting down on the constructor/starbase spam. In other words, just make it so that colonies can only benefit from the effects of 1 starbase. Just that one change would alleviate many of the problems of tech research snowballing too fast late game, problems of the AI not being able stay anywhere close with player pr

What's this? Work on low level engine guts? Surely you jest! Nobody cares about memory leaks and slow turn times and creeping data structure corruption and glitchy saves and game crashes!!!111! Give her some pixels to paint or something! (ahem) It's great to see you back on the team, CariElf! As someone who has quit other games in frustration over any and all of the above, it's nice to know you'l

I noticed the same thing. Seemed really random when it worked at all, I could not deduce any particular pattern (though I wasn't very scientific about it). I do remember one game where one field just spewed resources constantly, sometimes several each turn, and ALL my other resources were completely barren. Weird.
