If your talking about the start menu open Start8 and use small icons in the Configure tab and remove some icons from the start menu. That will make it smaller. Reduced 96%Original 477 x 455
Or if you don't need 20 programs on your start menu just use the allocate room for large icons and choose a small number. I use 7 and my start menus are short.

Being able to hide it under personalization is much better. That way you can just use the one on your dock.
I have the perfect name, alt + 255
Amazon is going to ship me Pamela Anderson....
lol, you don't want her, she is wore out and broken and would be to hard to return because of all the silicone wind drag which would cause the drones to become unstable in flight.
Here is what I found running my laptop with Windows 8, I7 2.50gh Processor and 8gb ram. When I cold boot it I have a working desktop in 67 seconds which includes typing a 4 digit passcode. With fast boot I have a working desktop in 28 seconds with typing the passcode. Big difference.
I agree, it is cool.
Maybe I am misunderstanding you Jafo. I can only speak for myself but I have no problem using 3rd party software to make it look good and even ad functionality. Like I said you would be hard pressed to know I was running Windows 8.1. It looks and acts just like my windows 7 system. It is no harder to use then Windows 7. Truthfully I see no benefits of nuking 8.1 and going back to 7 or xp or whatever. Out of the box yes but spending an hour of installs and tweaks is worth it to me, it might no
Jafo I agree that MS should get it right in the first place but we customize our gui's anyway. I just don't get complaining how it looks. The way my laptop is set up you would not know I was running windows 8.1 unless you checked system properties. What is the big deal with taking an OS that works better, but looks ugly and making it look good and even be more user friendly with the help of Stardock software. Like I said most if not all on this site will do it anyway on any
I don't like Windows 8. I'm only 38 years old. Been using Windows since version 3.11.
Yes but you are one person too. I am talking about majority which I believe (though I have no statistics to back it up), that most would be older then 38.
I have to side with Phoon on this one. I have been using 8 and now 8.1 and for the most part see only improvements. As far as it is being ugly well yes it is if you don't customize it. Probably going to ruffle a few feathers but I wonder what age has to do with it for those that don't like it. From what I have seen it is often those up in years that simply do not like change. My father went from xp to windows 7 and hated it so much he got mad one day and launched the towe
But, you can add a texture to only the taskbar, etc.
This is actually the easiest way to individually color just the taskbar, start menu, etc. if you are not experienced with skinstudio. Just use a picture of any color you want and add it as a texture to the part of the skin you want colored. Even using this method will have various results though as Island Dog mentioned.

That is a great work around frankell. I am wondering if icons with a larger transparent boarder around them will do the same thing?
Thanks neone6.
That is fantastic Tom. I agree with the Doc, has a SF/space look to it.
"I am not going to respond here again because you won't listen or admit when you're proven wrong. It's pointless. You win." Now Now Jim, Don't give up yet, I am learning some stuff here.
It still amazes me how someone that has never tried something can tell someone else it is no good. I did not want to go with Windows 8 because I was happy with 7 and the fear of the unknown was a deterrent. Then my laptop gave up the ghost so when I was doing my shopping the store had already got rid of the 7 machines so I had little choice but to buy a laptop with 8. Like Leo I had to get use to it. I then did the free upgrade to 8.1 and had some issues but I believe those were my own doing.

lol, You suppose I should turn my laptop off once in a while?
