Soulfire, Quite right, if you connect the top to the bottom and the left to the right (with no twists), you get a doughnut or torus. If you connect two opposite edges with no twists, you get a cylinder. With a twist, a mobius strip. If you twist on pair of edges and connect the other pair without a twist, you get a Klein bottle. LifeWish, We aren't actually talking about the "real universe" but about a game where the edges of the play space could be connected to change the strategic situation. Just for fun and variety :)
Yeah, I always thought it would be interesting to play on sphere, or a torus (or maybe even a Klein bottle or projected plane :) ) by connecting up edges. But that's a refinement. I'd much rather they put their effort into AI that can really kick butt--and it sounds like they have. :D
The Orion Sector, http://www.orionsector.com/, is considering adding coverage of GalCiv. The Orion Sector is a nice MOO3 site--I think it would make a fine addition to the rather sparse set of GalCiv fan sites. Take a look and let them know what you think.

MOO3 does offer multiplayer but it is thin. There is no hot seat nor is there play-by-email. Moreover, I think design of MOO3 makes it very easy to exploit (all you need is notepad). I hope that GalCiv's multiplayer (if and when it becomes available) will be both more secure and more flexible. I think the decision to hold off on multiplayer until it can be done correctly is a good one.
