RE: Occupation armies. It's not just CivIII. It's also Age of Wonders, every Total War game, and about every game in which a single hero unit can slaughter the garizon, but can't handle police/fireman duties. The micro-management bothers me a lot less than rolling AIs does. RE: Better AI fixing everything. It would make the game more fun. But it would still feel wrong to be able to flip cities with as little trouble as now. Speaking for myself, wrong -> not

I have to disagree with Apprentice Swordsman being useless. It's a prerequisite for the rest of the Swordsman perks, and by the end those net you +3 initiative and a non-trivial (about 60%) increase in cutting damage
Something else that would tie well is stronger penalties for unrest: 1. The existing production/research penalties 2. No militia defenders at medium unrest levels 3. Outright rebellion at high unrest levels Of course, this would require the ability to suppress unrest with garrisoned troops - every man in the garrison would reduce unrest by 3% or so, and a champion would be just as much as a policemen as a lowly spearman. This will also help to alleviate t
To blow my own horn, check my After-Action-Report "No restores, Ridiculous AI, large map, dense monsters" in this forum. You can see how a single city survives against ridiculous AIs and dense monsters. The sovereign picked a profession when the point counter was at 0, but the profession is "Diplomat" and he is not using it, so the strategies will work.
Thanks for the kind comments, they are a big part of my enjoying this log. Rhadagast , the pace of the updates is unlikely to increase - I updated to 0.914, and I have to restore to 0.913 in order to play Boss Smiley. But I am enjoying it, so you can expect that while slow, the updates will continue... until the Slavers are wiped out, or until the whole world is
Play-through (Turn 70 - 79) An amazing show of restraint by an Umber pioneer. Lets hope the Slag stays asleep Turn 70: A number of Yithril pioneers approach from the West. I only have enough mana for one monolith, and decide to use it to deny some prime real estate to the Umb
State of the Stronghold (Turn 70) At the end of the Summer of 176, the Kraxis Empire has been destroyed and its lands and population have been assimilated. We will have a quiet harvest, but expecting a long period of peace would be shortsighted. Even our fellow Kingdoms look at our military successes with apprehension. As

I would not. This game's strengths would not shine in multi-player, and you are wrong in thinking that it is easy to just add something like multi-player to a finished product. One has to plan ahead of time, and that would adversely affect the quality of the single-player. But I would pay a dollar to make sure no effort is spent on multi-player.
Speaking of the minimum time to train/build, why is it 3 turns? I find it annoying that a high production city has to spend nearly an year throwing a pub together, or finding housing for a cleric. Even more annoying when I am playing a single city with production over 400, and have to train a light scout for an year. (I don't. I train an unit with scouting traits that can eat demons for breakfast, but I would still rather have a light scout in one turn without spending mana/Gi
Play-through (Turns 60 - 69) Who needs armor when one's got hit points? Turn 60: Boss Smiley has a choice to make. He can use "Cloud Walk" to get to the action and lay waste to the troops threatening our wester
State of the Stronghold (Turn 60) On turn 60, Stronghold's lands are being invaded from two sides. From the Northwest come numerous Kraxis troops. There is little cause for alarm, though. We are mostly facing pioneers escorted by poorly trained spearmen. Our archers may be able to fight them back all
Thanks for the kind comments... I'm happy that someone else is enjoying this. But I have to admit, I am tempted to upgrade to Beta 0.914. I would in a second if I save games were compatible. Does anyone know? I also welcome comments about the format/depth/focus of the reports. I am conflicted about how much I should try to stay in character, for example... in the beginning I was not even thinking about that.
All of these are good suggestions. And the rules are relatively simple to implement. The problem is with designing A.I. that works well with them. Trust me on this one. One of our term project's goals in college was a 'simple' tactical game which had nothing but Zone of Control, Defending, Charge, and Opportunity Attacks. We were a four person team, three of whom were a team that made it twice to the ACM college programming finals. We
Play-through (turns 50 - 59) Yes, it's prime real estate. No, you won't be settling there. Turn 50: The Slavers invent a new type of slave holding facility, but in order to improve the faction's prestige and influence call it an almshous
State of the Stronghold (turn 50) On turn 50, the Slavers have just defeated the Empire of Resoln, and are preparing for war with the Empire of Kraxis. Before attacking, we will explore and pacify our homelands as much as possible, as well as scout their territory. As for their pioneers, we plan to use the threat of war to keep them
On the subject of -1 hp for Wraith units. I think it's not so bad at all. Before .913 I was making all my custom sovereigns Wraiths for the +3hp per kill which is amazingly useful in the early and late game. Early because the enemies are weak and die easily, late because the sovereign is strong and kills easily. Now that total hit points have been reduced and the Pariden actually get the shard bonus, I am actually playing different races, but I still have a .913
Play-through (Turn 41 through 49) Donya's pioneers starring at the Great Wall of Crystal Turn 41: The wolves leave my lands, but an Ignys comes in view. The Pariden pioneers have also managed to wander out of sight. I hope the wolves eat them. In any case,
State of the Stronghold (Turn 41) The World as we know it On turn 41, the Slavers have mostly explored the immediate surroundings of Stronghold, and have cleared the weakest lairs. They have encountered two Kingdoms with which they have signed non-aggression pacts, and one Empire whose influence
I installed the game on my laptop, and I can now see the point counter. The bug is that you get to choose a profession even if the counter is at zero. I have not had a chance to use "Silver Tongue" yet, the diplomacy bonus is bugged, and can always give the 20 influence away. Anyway, I'm still enjoying the game. But if you guys think the play-though is worthless because Boss Smiley is haxored, I'm not going to post... well I'm not going to post about hi
Furthermore, if you get to keep Death shrines if you capture them as they are being built (by capturing cities, or raising outposts and building your own on the same turn) This way you can have all kinds of shards as well. I do not use Soul Steal, but I have had a level 4, broken-spirited death caster serving a Kingdom owning 3 death shards.

Sentinemodo, I do not plan on building any cities. One of the house rules for this game is "No new cities, conquered cities get razed". The 'flavor' justification is that the Slavers are paranoid magic users. They do not trust anyone but themselves with any kind of power. Stronghold has a three-tiered society - Nobles (magic users, slave owners), Guardians (warriors) and slaves (everyone else) Nobles are degenerates that do nothing themselves and live
The rules: All settings maxed : Large map, Ridiculous AI, dense monsters/sites, and custom sovereigns for Umber and Capitar. No cheating , for example no file editing. No restoring except for crashes, and slowdowns during tactical combat that would too long to compete. No exploits without an in-game explanation. I.e. no 7 poi
