Benefits of larger populations in Galactic Civilizations II GalCiv2 Forums

Hi, quick question I was hoping someone could help with... Regards population in GC2, whats the benefit to increasing population? As in, will it increase income, research or manufacturing? I know it helps with votes in the United Planets and can help influence, but Im interested in those other 3 stats.
