Although I also prefer directional thrusters, it is possible to orient the ship with inertia wheels and have it move only back and forth but they would go tokyo drift in space XD. Although as they are now and to be realistic with the science we know, it should have thrusters in front or rotate the ship and put the thrusters facing the opposite side to decelerate. But for me It would be fine with a few small thrusters in front.

i dont think its a good idea. having to plan these kind of things makes the game and the orbital mechanic way more interesting. i think that the fact that in any time a research focused planet gets a jump path with an enemy planet is a key element and makes the game more realistic and hardcore. removing surface structures in exchange of some resources (many) would be better in my opinion.
