AI has an ascension crystal. What are my possible courses of action? in Strategies GalCiv2 Forums

I'm playing my first GC2 game and doing very well. However, one of the AIs decided to take an ascension crystal and now the countdown is at 400. Even more insulting, the ascension crystal is within my territory! I know I can destroy the starbase, but that will start a war, and I'd like to know if I have any other options to stop their path to ascension.
