I use Linux as a dual boot to my Windows, but I prefer not to take it online. It is more of a learning tool for me, always nice to "expand" ones horizons whenever possible. And, since there are others like myself here on WC, I see no reason not to "discuss" these things, but sure, I can understand youe point MadIce, Windows Customization is not for Linux, but Linux customization has "ideas" that can be bebeficial to Skinners on WC. Lets not limit ourselves and retreat into a si

The "issues" always generate heated arguments and such, in the end, it's all just chat. As a general rule, knowing this, we try to avoid those kind of "issues" [Message Edited]

It probably comes as no surprise that the top two U.S. residential cable-modem Internet service providers — @Home and Road Runner — provide Internet connectivity to the host machines most often sought by malicious hackers for the installation of bandwidth flooding Zombie attack Trojans http://grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/sb.gif" border=0 ALIGN="

Dr. Doog, Not all information is useful or profitable for sharing. I wouldn't teach a child how to shoot a gun just because I knew how, that would be highly irresponsible on my part, as is the info you are passing on to so many others,

I once had a wallpaper (not from WC) that had an embedded code in it that tried to contact the author without my permission. I only found it because everytime I loaded the thing, it would try and create a connection. I wasn't as sophisticated then as I am now so I am not sure if ant-virus/trojan software could find it. Once I realized what was going on, I deleted the wallpaper and the problem vanished. There may be a wallpaper or a WB or "something" along those lines causing this event. I wo

Well, out of all of that, I learned quite a bit. So overall, it was my gain. BTW, I went directly to MSN's site and DLed the latest version of MSN Messenger 6.0, and so far I have had good beginnings with it. It is also much nicer than the "upgrade" one I received earlier. It is free. <img src="http://images.stardock

The problem came back... ...as soon as I went online there it was again. So I contacted my ISP and through "Live Chat" discovered that they began using an Email Client that requires Microsoft Office. Not having MS Office, I was asked to choose Outlook Express. When I did so, the Window so far, has not returned. On another note, The other day I began using MSN Messenger which I rather liked, however, not long afterward I began getting "Pre-attack probes. Today in a 20 min

I don't know if this is anything since I am a home user, but I have detected a higher rate of probes in the "High Security Risk" mode. Two days ago, I had an attempted hit that came through my ISP. They were called "malformed packets" designed to crash server/networks. My protection stopped it cold, and I have kept a record of them. <A HREF="https://www.wincustomize.com/index.asp?

All fixed now, well last night. It was MSN messenger. I had used the version that came with my OS, and then I upgraded it, but had problems DLing the upgrade. On the third attempt, I got it to DL. After §tatic and pictoratus pointed me in the right direction, I used my Auto-Start Manager to unload IM, then I rebooted, loaded IM again in Auto-Start, rebooted again. I heard what sounded like an avalanche in my HD as everything corrected itself. This mor

Lo and Behold §tatic, you hit the nail on the head. I had installed MSN Messenger and did have a problem DLing the upgrade. Unfortunately, this morning I crashed so bad, I had to reinstall my OS, plus a few other things, and well, you can understand why I couldn't. Thank - you very much. <img src="ht

Thanks Nakor, but having done that, it still comes back. Anyone interested can see a picture of it on my Desktop. Just click my nick and then the pict to open it up full size. It's a .jpg. Any help will save the hair on my head. <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/sb.gif" border=0 AL

Today I began recieving a pop up window entitled "Select Data Source" I have no idea what it is or where it comes from other than after I log online. It has two tabs: 1-File Data Source 2-Machine Data Source 1- IT says,"Select the file data source that describes the driver you wish to connect to. Yoou can use any file data source that refers to an ODBC driver which is installed on your machine." 2- Says, "A Machine Data Source is specific to this machi

I used to be a Professional Woodturner. I would look endlessly through magazines for "turned shapes" and store them in my mental library. Some months later while working on a project, I mentally drew upon those shapes incorporating them into the project at hand. I never used the pictures in the magazines to visually copy from them, and never had them in my workshop. I considered that not a copyright infringment, nor did anyone else. I consider mOrphiums work to be much along

Yes Roger, your not alone. I have this same problem also. For the 5th weekend in a row starting every Friday afternoon my connection to WC deteriorates to the point that it takes nearly 10-20 minutes to load the WC Web page by Saturday if it will load at all. Then come late Monday all is fine again. But just to insure it is not my machine as many suggest because I am using Windows ME, or it's my anti-virus and or Firewall software, I have purchased new Anti-virus/troja

Well, I tried 6 times until the page finally opened, but then after pressing the register button, 10 minutes later and still nothing. Yet once one registered, it says it will take 3 more months for it to take effect. Unlike our Government, I don't have this kind of time to sit around and waste let alone get paid for. I have to work and hope I get paid enough to feed myself. No wonder our economy is in such bad shape and getting worse. ><img src="http://images.stardock.com/image
