Well golly. Didn't realize I was in good company with another musician on here. I like it and look forward to hearing how it develops. Riku's Yehat theme was definitely always one of my faves and while I always wanted to remaster or remake it, I just never got around to doing it.

The mistakes we make as well as the cool new things we are doing.
I was just opining on this in another thread with the hope that some thought is being given to not just remaking what we already know and expect, but genuinely innovating and surprising people by incorporating new dynamics, mini games, alternate play modes, or other concepts nobody may even be anticipating. Have a feeling this is going on already, but it's too ear

I've tried suggesting the same thing! Would love to see a little alternate "strategic play mode" as an homage to SC1. It could be a feature built on top of the standard melee with a randomized map that allows you to "control stars" (ha!) and initiate melee with other fleets by choosing which ships get sent to battle and where in a turn-based format. Or hell, I'll go for broke and say how about an RTS version of SC1? Don't see why the hell not. Except instead of the units f

Brad was trying to post some old gameplay testing images of Ashes of the Singularity as an example of how primitive it looked in the early stages of development but the link required a login to view. Maybe he'll show it to us later...

Your post made me think of how there's actually very little distinction between the two types of agencies in a lot of science fiction stories; space exploration generally gets folded up under the same military umbrella as the Navy or Air Force. Starfleet in Star Trek and the Earth Defense Force in the recent Independence Day sequel are two examples that immediately spring to mind of what you'd get if you merged NASA with the military. And the Colonial Marine Corps from Aliens
I agree, but I would like to be able to upgrade my fleet escorts as I would the Vindicator, as some ships would fall out of favor with newer designs, it would be nice if even the older models of ships have a (albeit small) niche. Customizing escorts would also go a long way to strengthening the RPG element of the game, and creating a bond not only between you and your ship, but also your entire fleet.
What you're referring to was

I brought up that same concern in a post some time back. I'd also like to have more of an opportunity to explore and not feel quite so rushed by a firmly imposed time constraint, especially considering the scope of the new universe is bound to be larger with more things to discover. If there IS still a time constraint, the idea of being able to push it back by completing certain tasks or quests is a good recommendation.

Thanks for finally acknowledging this, Vaelzad. Even though there won't be underwater exploration, the fact there will still be different lander gameplay dynamics is very reassuring. What are the chances of being able to explore gas worlds without a solid surface to land on?

The behavior on this forum often makes me embarrassed to be a Star Control fan. The supercilious browbeating that is becoming a daily occurrence on here is not their fault nor their responsibility to correct by acquiescing to demands for more content. As far as I'm concerned, I consider myself privileged to have seen as much as I have already and you've got some gall to suggest the behavior on the forum is somehow on them rather than on any of the individuals who might be invo

I've been vocal at every opportunity to bring this idea up in other threads. Mentioned the concept several months back to expand on the idea of new exploration concepts. Recently brought it up again in the latest "planet exploration" thread. I would absolutely love to see the lander upgradable into a vehicle that can dive down into oceans not just of water, but also oceans of liquid gas on frozen worlds or maybe even lakes of metallic elements that are liquid at standard temp

Even a cursory search on the web will reveal a trove of info about Star Control. You'll find most folks have very fond memories for the game due to its combination of many genre elements bundled together in a way that makes it difficult to categorize, although it is an action adventure at its core. The very first game did not have an adventure element to it and was more of a simple tactical strategy and action title. I am pretty fond of the retrospective video this guy did. It doe

Very cool to hear how much of a commitment is being made to the project. Many of Stardock's games have great attention to detail so it is reassuring to hear that you are really bringing all forces to bear on the development of this. If you can bring the concept art of those planet environments to life, it will have all been worth it!

I like the direction this line of thinking is headed with additional suggestions of what could be achieved with atmospheric effects to supplement the geographic details. Seeing really gigantic monoliths from orbit would probably be more realistic than seeing unnaturally huge geographic features extending into space, at least. By the same token, it would be great to have conspicuously unnatural/artificial surface features or architecture obscured by atmospheric effects so that the

^ Syra is Beta Copernicus 1. It's one of the worlds with Mycon egg case fragments. Also: your list reminds me how I always thought it was a little weird that so many homeworlds were the innermost planet in the system. Generally speaking in systems with habitable stars, those worlds are statistically likely to be unsuitable for life. I'd enjoy seeing new alien species that hail from colder worlds that we'd consider inhospitable, e.g. silicon races like the Chenjesu,

Really great suggestion. I think having atmospheric effects like this in place of (or in addition to) the exaggerated geographical features would go a long way towards assuaging the criticisms of it looking unrealistic in a goofy way, and instead make it unrealistic in a more acceptable "fantasy" way.
Those of you reading this thread, what do you think? It is, by far, our most concerning issue. There are a lot of people who think the Spathi and Orz ARE Star Control. Whereas, to us, Star Control is about being the captain going out on an adventure to explore strange worlds, deal with aliens, fight cool battles in a game that is held together by a great story.
Agreed. There are a lot of people who think that. There

This would not be my first time suggesting this but I'd love to see Stardock offer some type of strategic gameplay mode in addition to other gameplay modes. Not just different types of melee (e.g. capture the flag, base defense, etc.) but also some type of alternate strategic mod in honor of SC1. We all know that SC2 defied categorization by being a combination of genres -- this fact was just explicitly acknowledged in the August Developer Log, after all -- but the different

Nice. Takes me back to the old way of doing things. Seems like everybody in competitive gaming nowadays just wears a headset and tries their damndest to look as stoic as an emotionless statue. This actually made me think of possible competitive gameplay feature that would also be a clear and obvious tribute to the Pkunk: taunts! Of course, insults were only part of their character as a special ability, but lots of games have taunt animations or dialog for different character c

I like to think I'm active with regard to anything germane to the subject of Star Control here, though with the dearth of sanctioned discussion and contrasting abundance of threads that are either completely off the rails or steeped in petulant arguments, I feel there hasn't been much to be active about lately. Really looking forward to that changing soon. That said, I am also quite ready and so is my Corsair Strafe. [e digicons]\o/[/e]

Just had to bring religion and politics into it, didn't you? [e digicons];)[/e] Your points actually got me thinking; I thought it would be clever if we do start out as weaponless explorers and then as the story unfolds, the actual process of taking all the nukes out of mothballs from the dark side of the moon becomes one of your first exploration quests. Similar to how your first quest in SC2 was visiting the moon to check out the broadcast station before taking out the ha

Can't create an account; Captcha prompt is not working. That said, I'm curious how this wiki would differ from the Ultronomicon. It's hands down the de facto online repository for all of Star Control with comprehensive entries for every imaginable part of the games, and I don't see the point in simply duplicating it. Unless perhaps we're going to make it look totally slick by comparison. So what is the mission statement of this wiki and what is the nature o
