Even "adequate" is probably being generous. I know it's just an animatic with placeholder music and text to get a general idea of things, but even a teaser needs more than this. Nobody cares about spaceships blasting each other in the year 2XXX. Give the audience something unique about the story to get interested in.

Interesting animatic, but not much narrative material to really comment on here. Don't care for the "8-bit" sound at all; sounds like something I could crank out in 15 minutes on my tracker. Star Control deserves something a lot more sophisticated especially considering what we've seen from GalCiv's cinematics. I figure it's just placeholder music anyway.

Ben D. The nasally, sniveling lisp is pretty cute. Sounds like a real characterization or a cartoon character, rather than just another voice actor reading lines. It's great when the actor can give an alien a unique characteristic, rather than just reading lines in a regular speaking voice. I think he's one of the best based on what I've seen from the preliminary Tywom renderings. Bryce P. Not sure if he's ideally suited to the Tywom, but he reminds me o

The alien dialog themes are all decent enough, but I'm extremely underwhelmed with the melee theme. Is that supposed to be a pre-battle/ship selection/configuration theme? Because it sure ain't a Star Control melee theme. Not only is it way too slow, it doesn't have a single red alert klaxon. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I've written better melee themes and I'm concerned this one is headed off in the wrong direction. I also believe it would be extremely

I get the whole multiverse concept that is being established and it makes sense; it actually is reminiscent of Star Trek to me. Many of the stories weren't really serialized in nature, but often disconnected from one another narratively and could exist as separate stories from one episode to the next. However, I remain curious about the relationship that Stardock intends to have with Toys for Bob and how it will be actually come to fruition to be realized, given the nature of how things w

I came across this title recently, although it's probably been in known development for some time. I was immediately struck with its similarity to Star Control and I thought the community here would be very interested. Anybody else familiar with it? It's hard to say how this title could inspire Star Control as it is also some way off from being released. It clearly has a more dramatic tone and I'm sure it won't be a direct analog to Star Control, but it seems like it s
What do you all (including devs) think about introducing some classic stuff like shield, armor, crew (health) scheme. Some ships might have more armor, others - shield, some might have none oe each and etc.
+1. I have attempted to bring this up in previous conversations but it has not been acknowledged. The crew/battery dynamic is not only very outdated but should also not apply to every single ship or race. I always thought there s

Starting to tinker with the dialog tool and will be playing more when I get home tonight! Very neat. I really like the style of the dialogue theme and the fact that there are two themes has me revisiting a question I posed several months ago: is it reasonable to expect that there will be multiple race-specific styles of music for common situations? Different themes based on which species you are dealing with would be excellent. SC2 only had one common theme for space explorati

You'll probably be waiting awhile for a full list of modding features but the big things that I can recall being disclosed or at least hinted at are: full dialog tree scripting editor/quest system (this is supposedly one of the first tools they're hoping to release to us for evaluation) extensive ship design tools (far more than just upgrading your mothership, I'm imagining this to be something like the GalCiv3 ship editor for making your own species and t

I'm content with Stardock taking as long as it wants to get it right and don't really have any firm expectations for project milestones, so long as they don't pull a Half Life 3. Been waiting a quarter century for this franchise to come out of hibernation, so knowing that it's actually happening is good enough for me.

You probably weren't imagining it; it's established that Orz gills collect dissolved gases from the "ethanol" solution they float in. I always thought it was kind of a humorous implication from Paul Reiche that perhaps the Orz were so unusual because they were basically drunk all the time. And I don't really think the box art was "greenlit" after the fact. More like an artist was commissioned to produce something without enough source material to work from. Back in the day

I didn't apply to be a founder under the delusion that I would be "making a difference" in how the game is developed. Unlike other "early access" situations where people invest in titles before they're ready, we are a prequalified group of people who have been purposefully chosen to participate because we know the source material. We are basically an online focus group and they can take our opinions or leave them. Being a founder is a privilege; being an early access p

I don't feel that either the alien designs or voice acting ultimately detracted from SC3. On the contrary, I really loved all of the voice acting and felt it was probably the single most complimentary part of the game. SC3 was the black sheep of the franchise not just because it attempted to do something different from SC2, but because it failed terribly at doing so. The puppets were sort of a byproduct of their time in an era where FMV gaming was a big deal. Could they have

Nice. I'd be lying if I said the footage I've looked at didn't evoke similar reactions for me, although the different genre it occupies gave me pause. It kind of strikes me as a 4X version of Star Control, but I wasn't sure if I should pull the trigger on it. I already got early access to Master of Orion and quite frankly, I'm content just waiting until it's in full release before playing again ... really wasn't digging the idea of essentially playtesting through a

As a followup to my earlier post, here is an excellent graphic of all the alien designs from Stellaris. I wouldn't consider any of these cartoony, yet they are all hand drawn. And even despite a majority of them technically being defined as humanoid, they are all very differentiated and exotic. A few of them are admittedly just heads interchangeably attached to the common clothing styles but I'm very impressed with the huge variety they came up with. They all exhibit a lot mor

I also agree. I would like to see character design more in line with recent titles like Stellaris, Stardrive, or GalCiv. The Syreen, Arilou, Druuge, and Utwig were hardly big risktakers in terms of alien design, but the Ur-Quan, Umgah, Zoq-Fot-Pik, Slylandro, Mycon, Supox and Chenjesu were all out there in terms of having biology that has no evolutionary ties to life on Earth. I don't like to think that because they were hand-drawn illustrations that this made them intrinsica

Sure, find the magic cadbury "easter egg" planet and break through the delicious candy coated chocolate shell to uncover amazing stuffs! I dunno about hollow though since most planets are solid, but I'm all for spelunking in underground caverns and diving down into bodies of water (or other liquids and liquified gases!) to explore the depths as a submersible. I'd love to see all kinds of things bringing the lander experience to life in a way SC2 was never abl

I didn't find any ambiguity in Brad's statement; it was my interpretation that he meant planetary exploration is going to play a much bigger role as an action gameplay element than it did in SC2. Whereas melee was the primary action element back then, planet exploration was by comparison a mini-game. All of the elements of using the lander on a planet's surface were like a very simplified version of melee. I believe Stardock wants planetary exploration to be just as engagi

I agree on the inclusion of the traditional constellations in the genitive name form. It is most familiar and truest to both the game's history and to what we know about observable stars. SC2 did not preserve the asterisms of constellations as we know them in our night sky. Their layout in hyperspace (or actual space, for that matter) does not represent their proximity from us, or from one another, so it may be more straightforward from a gameplay perspective for constellations to

Nice, a fellow input aficianado! Although I'm probably way more casual of a mechanical keyboard enthusiast than you. You are clearly hardcore compared to me. I'm fascinated by how people in the community are always macguyvering old and new stuff into new layouts these days, but haven't gotten into doing it myself. I have a Das Pro Ultimate Cherry Brown at work and a Corsair K70 Cherry Silent at home, but I never really adjusted to the new silent keys. I think they're t
