Nope, I always disable it after a re-install/whatever. Its somethin you dont need, and frees up resources on reboot.
It provides the overlaying drivers for the msstyles format that microsoft and StyleXP use.

Perhaps you should try BandVWM, Stardock's multiple desktop program. Its extremely fast, and great to work with!

Right click and hit "Customize" then down in the lower left hand side of the box, you can tell it to turn off the text labels.

There is, sort of. If you tell it to show the shortcut to a folder as a menu, you can build a kkMenu type setup using folders etc..
