That might be the BEST post ive read on this forum, and very hopeful the developers see this and some how duplicate it. Everything you just laid out is exactly how I felt when I first played the game. I have been very vocal with my displeasure of the alternate timeline story. I may NEVER truly in my heart regard this game as "star control" BUT if the developers find a way to duplicate all of what you just decribed im SURE I will enjoy the game as much if not more than the original Star Contro

Fair enough BUT the statement was made that the game was going to be based in an alternate timeline seperate from the urquan timeline. now if that's been changed and something awesome has been talked about it wasn't mentioned here. I do sincerely hope there is a really kool way to develop the story without an alternate timeline. So by all means do what you must but I hope some of the feedback here has been of some value.
'cause they'll know in the back of their minds that Spathi and Pkunk are still out there and the new players won't care much
THATS IT! I know this sounds illogical BUT I think my problem with the alternate timeline is that it essentially blinks the original game out of existence. The new game doesn't have to include the original lore it just needs to coexist with it. Than even though the Spathi aren
If you read my posts you know I've not been hung up on the lore part. I've been critical of the alternate timeline. There are creative ways to develop a story that COEXISTS with the original story that DOES NOT use the original lore OR prevent Paul and Fred from expanding on their story. If you design a game that ignores the original lore completely as opposed to creatively creating a story that coexists with it. Than its NOT Star Control. That's a direct answer to the direct ques
I suggest that you don't comment if you feel provoked to post. You don't want to antagonize and drive away hardcore fans and possible gaming journalists.
Especially in a post that ASKED for opinions and feedback
Sorry double post
No it's not that easy. Don't cut my question in half. I said Stardock chose to purchase the licensing, but leave the original lore with its creators. You have said repeatedly why your leaving the lore with Paul and Fred what you haven't answered is, why you chose to purchase the rights to the name. Stardock could have easily made a new game LIKE Star Control. You say your learning from others mistakes. Accolade designed a game alot different from the original game with a bad story
1- You read the comments of the people that are most vocal. And just like in any other group, the most vocal people are often the extremists. What I am saying is that you do not have an accurate view of all hardcore fans, only the die-hard ones that would rather not have a new game than to have one that is on iota differe
Meleemike EXACTLY! I can get on board with that. Travel back in time to save the precursors while running into ancient races who were only mentioned in star control 2 would be a creative story that includes races, history, and lore from SC2 without taking anything away from Paul and Freds intellectual property. I hope Stardock is paying attention.
While I truly do respect Stardock's decision to pave their own way, and I believe they'll make something good, I just wonder why they want to use the Star Control name. It seems like they are going for brand recognition, while not using the brand, and this really bugs me. They respect Fred and Paul enough to not mess with the lore, but apparently not enough to not mess with the name. How well would it h
How many times have they rebooted spiderman?
PERFECT!!! I am so glad you asked THIS question. Go read the details about Sonys decision to share the Spiderman property with Disney... http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/02/14/why-sony-corp-is-sharing-spider-man-with-walt-disn.aspx " The impetus for this deal can be traced back to the 2014 failure
I was referring to Frogboys original post he said "In movie terms, it's akin to the way the Marvel comics properties tend to get split up between Sony, Fox, and Marvel Studios (Disney)" BUT its not anything like that at all, the properties that Marvel sell off are not able to simply ignore the past comic book lore, and market the movie as MARVEL. Ignoring all the races, and all the lore from SC2 would be like Sony making up a brand new Super Hero and slapping the name Marv
They didn't mean ONLY the Spathi. They meant ALL the aliens and ALL the lore from the original will NOT be present in the new game. They are making a video game that will have ZERO to do with the original Star Control. Do NOT give me that Marvel analogy BS, Fox, Sony, etc do a good job writing those movies so that a story is told inside the Marvel Universe without directly mentioning the other heroes. They do not simply explain it away by saying the X-men and Avengers are in
I think the point many of you are missing is the laziness of the idea itself. Stardock is stuck with a dilemma, how do you make a video game that can be apart of the Star Control franchise. BUT you cant use any of the already established lore, or characters. Their solution of a cataclysmic event in the past that creates an alternate timeline is NOT creative, its NOT original, and therefore it is NOT Star Control. What about this game will BE Star Control? It cant possibly be 2
ISSUE 1 IS A BIGGIE You want a game that does not include ANY races from the original Star Control stories, BUT you still want it to be Star Control, AND you want Star Control fans to accept it, while leaving it open for Toys for Bob to continue their story if they choose too? HERE IS HOW Instead of a cataclysmic event taking place in the past, make one occur in the future, one that wipes out all life in the Gal
I've never played Star Control. It's my secret shame. I don't know how I missed out on the original(s), but I'm looking forward to this new incarnation. Would it be worthwhile to play 1-3 first?
Star Control 1 is just a ship to ship fighting game, Star Control 3 is some junk they tried to pass off as a sequel. All you need to play is Star Control 2. One of the best games ever.
Well I guess Star Control to me is the entire universe, NOT just the UrQuan. The original story was a massively intricate story that intertwined dozens of races, past and present, from the Precursors, to the Sentient Milieu. Im not asking for a sequel, but I don't want to see a reboot either..... Maybe a better example of my train of thought is Star Trek Voyager. They took the show out of the known universe, gave you new races and fresh stories. You didn't need to see any of the movie
OK your right the definition of Canon is the "official" inclusion into approved forms of literature or media, meaning if Paramount does not recognize it, then its not Canon. Even though Star Trek is a bad example it still shows that 3rd party publications not affiliated with paramount in any way, are still able to creatively write stories that exist within the Star Trek Universe that do not affect the continuity of the universe, and do not prevent paramount from continuing with movies or show
https://forums.starcontrol.com/451171/page/1/#3526936 Direct Quote from this post "We are also "Rebooting" Star Control with a new game that is not part of the original Star Control canon. It will not be using the Ur-Quan continuity as we consider the Ur-Quan universe to be the property of Paul Reiche and Fred Ford and will not use the lore or the aliens of it without their permission."
I just cant understand why you think making a game that is cannon will affect the continuity of the universe. With a little imagination and creative thinking you should be able to create a stand alone game that is cannon with SC2 while still leaving the door open for Paul, and Fred to expand. I messaged you ONE creative idea, but there are alot of ways. Star Trek has hundreds of publications that are cannon with the Star Trek universe that do not affect the continuity of the films,or TV shows
Hmm so lemee see if I understand you. Your entire argument is based on the ASSUMPTION that an extended UrQuan Civil War would have led to extinction? That's like saying if the Atomic Bomb was never created you KNOW humans would be extinct because we would have fought ourselves to extinction in WWII. Im sorry man but that's way out on a limb. Also your assumption that the UrQuan could not rebuild their society enough to be relevant in "Galacti
Well, for one thing it would leave the Ur-Quan extinct long before the events of the existing games, and that's no fun.
Why in the world would that leave the UrQuan extinct? Please enlighten me. The UrQuan did not use the Sumatra against anyone but themselves before the events of the existing games. It was Kzer za that discovered it during the civil war with the Kohr Ah and used it to
Hmmmmm.....They are going the way of alternate timeline..... "Since Paul and Fred can't officially be involved, we decided we would create a new continuity that splits off from the Ur-Quan continuity starting 250,000 years prior where something happened to the Precursors." So the split begins with the precursors. As I look back on the history of Star Control 2, the precursors themselves had only a handful of individual influences on th
OK I know stardock is already set on a prequel because they want to introduce Star Control to a new audience, but the idea I have would introduce Star Control to a new audience AND give the old fans something they can reminisce about.... I mentioned this idea in an earlier thread, so sorry for the re-post but it makes more sense here. Instead of a prequel I would make a sequel only it would be FAR into the future. The main character is a Human, who was in a form of Cryo
I just finished UrQuan masters. The only thing I missed was the 3DO ending....So I watched it on youtube LOL
