XP restarting for no apparent reason: Yup. HD failure. If you notice files start disappearing for no good reason (maybe why the system errors came to life) that's a good indication too. S.M.A.R.T. warnings: S.M.A.R.T. is actually very smart. Yes, it detects future failures and should always be right if every part of the motherboard and the IDE card is functioning correctly and the BIOS settings are correct. Replace HD NOW!
