It’s not a scam. If you live in Canada, and can get a DVD shipped to you inside Canada at a lower price, more power to you. But for most other sites like Amazon they want like $20 to ship overseas. It’s crazy! The prices there are very competitive. Maybe a couple bucks more. But for those of us living overseas this is HUGE. Dvd’s in Japan run from about 3500 yen to 5000 yen each. They charge $25-30$ if its FED-EX. PC boxes are not that big any more. If you send it by regular air mail it doesn’t cost that much. International shipping is a huge scam! >:( I live in Japan, and I buy my games and DVDs from a place that charges NOTHING for international shipping. That’s right: NOTHING. OK, lets look at Democracy and Federalism for a moment. In the game they get a +40$ and +60% economy bonus. But look at the haven of pure democracy today: western Europe, where most governments operate on a variation of the proportional representation system. They are stagnant, bloated, declining countries. Look at Germany, that proportional representative system itself that pushes every tiny interest group into a political power PREVENTS them from doing any major restructuring of their economy.

While comparing the game to Star Wars, which is fiction, is interesting. However I think a comparison to Ancient Rome, which had both Republic and Imperial governments was more what I had in mind. Remember that Rome was a Republic first, then it developed into an Imperial system by Sulla and Augustus. There have been some GREAT ideas put forward in this thread! But it’s too bad that it was given such a strange name, so no one will read it. The empire getting so big that internal stresses slowly tear it apart is an interesting idea. They would have to be modeled carefully and not like corruption in CIV3. Looking back to the Roman Empire is a good idea, though why it collapsed is very complex and is still being debated. It is not just a matter of “it got too big”.
