From the combat log, the Dread Lord has deflectors, which are doing a decent job at mitigating your beam weapons. After many crushing defeats, I learned that no amount of HP or defense counter-measures would be enough to survive a single shot from a DL ship. However, DLs can only shoot one ship at a time. So I packed as much weaponry as I could into tiny ships (using the StarFury as a base), produced them en masse, then sent them on their way. The proof is in the pudding. The be

Good to know Kryo. I'd advise that you play a couple random campaigns in Dread Lords and Dark Avatar before moving to Twilight of Arnor though. I just purchased the pack a few weeks ago and wanted to jump straight to Twilight of Arnor. I always start each planet with buying a factory (rarely build the first), but in my last few games, I've started with xeno industrial tech already, opening up the manufacturing capital improvement. If it ever dips into the single digits, it's because it's been hit by an invasion or two, and as such, I use whatever remnant buildings to decide what type of speciatly I'll use. Haven't had to make a judgement call on a fresh lower PQ planet. Generally though, I'd only make a high PQ

I've barely started playing a few weeks ago, almost done with the Dread Lords campaign on Beginner\Normal. Sounds like your first problem can easily be addressed by using one of the most powerful and fun tools in the game: the shipyard. Create your own designs! You may have the technological advantage, but the core designs do not automatically update as you research better weapons, armor, shields, etc. Your StarFury is probably still using laser mk I, hyperdrive, and such not to
