That's great, I can't wait to try it out! It looks like the link for http://download.stardock.com includes the comma, which means it's not a proper link, there.

Sounds great! The link for http://download.stardock.com in the original post has the comma at the end as part of the link; it is a bad link at the moment.
So far, most of the areas mentioned in the poll are getting better with each patch, which is great to see. One area that hasn't gotten a lot of attention: making the cities individually interesting, and overall joined as a culture. Having a lot of cities spammed all across the map, with even more area taken up by outposts, feels like a weak area of the game. As has been discussed elsewhere, individual cities should be given different options, to get more "personality" over
For anyone interested in IE 9, is it worth pointing out that these "preview" versions install alongside IE 8 -- they don't replace it. So you can safely install it to test it out, without it replacing a complete browser. IE 9 is not currently a full "web browser", it has no interface or other features expected in one. It's just a preview of what it will become as a browser. As for hardware acceleration, Firefox developers have been working on that for a long time,
Compared to the previous versions of IE, IE 9 is a tremendous leap forward. By the time it is finally released late this year or early next year, though, most of it's fancier features (graphics acceleration, wider array of HTML5/CSS3 standard support, etc.) will be matched by Firefox and Chrome, and the other modern browsers. The big question is whether or not Microsoft will actually update IE 9 with new standards and features throughout it's life, or if they're going to just sit on t
Civ 5 is "threaded", but not in the sense that most programs are designed. Instead, the overall tasks are split up into hundreds of tiny "jobs", not large threads that are designed to go on specific cores. There's a great video of a talk covering this , given by Dan Baker of Firaxis and Yannis Minadakis of Intel, from GDC 2010. (You can put in any info for the "registration"
Here's a different point of view, for what it's worth. As someone who plays the game the way I want to and not to achieve any specific rating, I would have to agree that decaying the actual scores on the Metaverse over time would be somewhat annoying. Decaying the weight of the scores is good, to boost the overall rank of people who play regularly. In that regard, score weighting should probably be made clear, with the games that are fully weighted showing up on the individual player's list as a
How do I verify that the name I am submitting under is the same as my account, including email address... Once you log in there, just go to Edit Account and you can check on and update your email address, password, etc. You can also add extra information about yourself that will show up in your profile here, if you li
Repeatable CTD with 1.04.062 I'm running into a very regular CTD that seems to be related to leasing a trade good or galactic wonder. I do the lease, take the turn, and right as it goes into the 'Yearly Status Dialog' reports, the game crashes. I have a saved game that always crashes when the turn is made, if that's of help. SmartException gives the following info: Stardock SmartException Logging Information ------------------------------------------- O
Pykaige, I did a search through my raw data and I am not seeing anything from you. So it sounds like there is a possibility that the problem is from the game itself and not the server.
T-Man, thanks much for your help with this. Given that info, I managed to track down what appears to be an errant issue with my firewall, which somehow decided that it didn't like GalCiv anymore. I guess I'll know better from now on; thanks again for the help!
Just tried to post a game about 5 minutes ago that did not go through. It was a Crippling Huge game, with a win via Beyond Human, on GalCiv version 1.03A.057. I tried posting it about a week ago and it never showed up, and just tried again and it doesn't appear to be there.
A lot of great suggestions here, especially on the intelligence side of the equation. I'd be leary of giving too much ability to sabotage unless there was a relatively cheap way to counter it. Destabilization is already annoying enough when the AI puts it on you since you can't counter it at the source; the ability for the AI to take actions like knocking out social would make most players rather upset. One very simple request for intelligence: peg at a certain espionage level (probably
It should be pointed out that with 1.03 the AI is doing "fair" tech trading; they just trade a bit more aggressively with each other than they did before. (It certainly isn't like Civ3, where the AI civs received clear and increasingly strong bonuses when trading with each other, as you increased in difficulty level.) They also don't pay out multiple techs in a trade unless they really value the tech they're getting (often military techs, as mentioned above.) It's very clear what they're trading
The skull and crossbones icon never disappears once it arrives, even if you manage to keep the star system and gain tremendous culture so that there's little chance of the planet(s) flipping to someone else. (Of course, if someone does take the star system via culture or conquest, and you take it back, everything is reset.) It does seem a bit odd; if you do manage to keep the planet culturally and have more than double anyone else's culture in that sector for 24 turns, it would probably make mor
Those are two different issues: if the social project is not unique, you can build/destroy/rebuild it as much as you like, IIRC. As far unique social projects, if you've built it, you've have it; if you haven't, you don't. This is why you can conquer 3 different minor civs who each have a Manufacturing Capital and still get the option to build your own. The same is true for any other "one per race" social project. If you build one and destroy it, you're out of luck. It would probably wo
Ditto on the question about the "Anomalous" games. I just got bit by one myself that ended up as 0 points on the Metaverse instead of the 9000+ that it showed in game. :( Either way, the patch looks great; can't wait to try it out!
According to a post by Frogboy himself (http://www.google.com/groups?q=luck+author:brad+author:wardell&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=E4mcncAyI5c2OTyjXTWcpg%40comcast.com&rnum=2) Luck is actually very cool. It's modeled after the book a Spell for Chameleon where just "good things" happen to you when you need them. The background AI of the game basically just occasioanlly hands you things. Boy, the Drengin are really starting to come after me. What? A random space
1) Search ability for all text in messages, not just message headers. Ideally this would also include the ability to search for "all messages by foo posted in the last x hours/days", etc. 2) Ability to edit your own previously posted messages. 3) A "submit" button that greys out once you click on it, so people don't double post. ;) 4) The ability to put in proper html links, post pictures, etc. Can be useful when trying to report bugs or just show off what you did.<b
The thing about the tech victory that sets it apart from the other victory conditions is that you can do it without being dominant in any other field; you can be the small guy on in the game and still eke out a victory that way, if you can survive long enough. (Alliance victories are kind of like this, but still end up taking a good bit of work.) So, naturally, it does have to be set up to take a while to do so. The main thing for a tech victory is just making sure you aren't researchin
"You could have a civilization limit on starbases based on population or economics or technology." This sounds like the best idea of those mentioned here so far. The amount of starbases allowed overall should be tied to variables that take time and effort to increase: population would work well. One simple way would be to limit the amount of starbases allowed to the population only on planets, encouraging players to keep their popluation happy and growing, as opposed to using the "shuff
For a player to win via culture, they have to be at peace with all the other major races for a year and have the necessary cultural domination. Was the AI race at war with you? If so, presumably it would not be able to win via culture, either.
There is actually some skill in getting the best trade, and knowing which race will give how much. It's not just a straight, "this is worth X amount to everyone" sort of aspect that you see in most games of this type. Some races give a lot more via long term leases, some pay more up front, some refuse to buy just about anything. There are multiple factors that go into trading; at the higher skill levels, at least, you find great variability between the races.
The easy fix to this would be for the Metaverse to only raise your overall score by the games you add, not lower it. So people who wished to add low scoring games/losses would not be penalized, but it wouldn't make a difference to their score.
The game seems much more forgiving at the lower skill levels of actions like extremely high tax rates. Once you hit a crunch and have to play smarter at the higher skill levels, you'll find that high tax rates aren't an effective way to play. Basically, your population rate goes through the floor compared to everybody else's. This is stated explicitly in the "Galactic Civilizations Survival Guide" (gc_quickguide.html) that comes with the game: "The issue is that in GalCiv, your taxes co
