Little update: Since build 0.60, executing Ashes_DX12.exe rather than using the right click Steam option launch both DX11 & DX12 version of the game. This result in two processes & game instances loaded side by side.
As Kane mentioned, build 0.55 currently only run in DX12 when we right-click in Steam & use the Launch DirectX 12 Version shortcut. Running Ashes_DX12.exe from the game folder actually call & execute Ashes_DX11.exe. Trying to execute Ashes_DX12.exe with Ashes_DX11.exe missing yield a Steam popup box with with the following message: Failed to start game (missing executable). Alternatively, running the DX12 version from the steam shortcut work perfectly

Quick input on some Global abilities: Protect - To add on shurtugalll point: Rather than a sudden & unexplained temporary boost to armor, the PHC could enable their very limited but own take on the Substrate's shield technology. Something like absorb x damage and/or reach timer delay before powering down.
