I found a bug right off the bat when starting a game (1.04.59). Since I had saved a game right at the start (Jan 2178), I reloaded and repeated several times and got the same results. Here's the scene: Since there were no other star systems in the same sector as Sol, I decided to park my first colony ship (the Discovery) in orbit while I sent my surveyor (the Hero) out to explore anomalies. I noticed two problems when I did this. First, when I clicked on the Hero after parking the Disco

I just got mine over the weekend, and it actually comes in a DVD-style "clamshell" case instead of the more traditional jewel case for CD-ROMs. Don't let this fool you into thinking they sent you a DVD-ROM or PS2 disc (which also come in clamshell cases IIRC) that won't run on your PC. Rest assured, it is a CD-ROM. :)

There may be one exception to the "colonies-first" rule, that being if you are going for a tech victory. I just won a tech victory in a normal galaxy against sub-normal to bright AIs, where I only colonized one other system besides my own in the early stages of the game. Instead of just grabbing up all the systems I could, I focused on developing the hell out of those first two systems and building up their defenses, all the while sending out freighters and, of course, researching stuff like it

A home-sector base with lots of military upgrades, combined with a fleet that you keep in your home sector, can also serve as an effective deterrent from attack. That's what I did in my last game. I built a home-sector starbase and maxed it out on pretty much everything I could. I also built up a huge armada of corvettes, battle-axes and battle cruisers and kept them in the home sector. I had no intention of going to war - I was playing for a tech victory, which I did get :) - but the combinatio

Also, it goes pretty much without saying that if you're playing for a tech victory, once you start getting really close to Beyond Human, it's probably not such a good idea to trade your high-end techs to the AIs. That's basically letting them right back into the race to the Final Frontier. :D

I actually did something similar (albeit on a smaller scale) in my last game. The Yor had colonized a less-than-desirable system in the same sector as Earth; I had a trade route going between the two systems and had saved the game just as the Drengin (who were at war with the Yor but not with me) were moving in to attack the Yor system. As it turned out the first thing they did was to attack not the Yor system, but the Yor freighter going between that system and Earth. There went one of my trade

As 99.9% of GalCivvers have undoubtedly noticed by now, there are a number of terms and concepts obviously lifted right from the Star Trek universe - phasers, photon torpedoes, transporters, starbases, etc. There's even an explicit reference to "Deep Space Nine reruns" in the screen that appears when you finish researching 4D wormholes. My question to Frogboy and the other developers is, was all this authorized by Viacom Paramount? I've not been able to find any disclaimer to that effect anywher

Nidaros: No, you don't have to research every last tech in order to get to Final Frontier. You just have to research a certain series of techs. I won't list them all here, but it's easy enough to figure the sequence out for yourself: Just examine the tech tree, starting at Final Frontier and working your way backward through its pre-requisites, and all their pre-requisites, and so forth. The entire sequence is only roughly 20-25% of all the techs in the game (although you probably will need to r

And to think I just finished playing my first game with all the other empires set to the "fool" level. (For the record, I ended up winning culturally, although by all rights it should have been a military victory; I spent most of the second half of the game using a survey ship upgraded to the teeth from anomalies to soften up all the civs I hadn't been trading or friendly with, and then conquering them with transports.) The way you make it sound, I probably could have bumped the other AI's up a
