I did a game on tiny where I didn't colonize any other planet. But I did conquer rather than win science-wise or alliance. I think this could be made for an alliance victory quite easily: Ally yourself to the altarians or Torians (Altarians more trustworthy), then help them (culturally or by selling ships - culture is probably better as you'd hand them the planets you turn. You can probably get even more allies that way). A science victory would be more challenging. Which one do

a. Nothing - Only transports can attack planets without ships. b. Both are destroyed. c. The missile deals damage once (i.e. random number between 1 and AMM attack - 100 + your attack bonus) minus (dreadnought defense). Then the missile is destroyed. When stacked, I think the ship with the highest offense is targetted first. The AMM is always desstroyed after combat. Thus the best uses of AMM are: 1- As a deterrant. The ai fears AMM for their big attack

Bring as many as you can. Even if you don't take the planet, you cause more damage than you take, so you reduce their econ accordingly. What I do is look at star system population first. It's often easier to conquer the less populated star in a sector if there are several, then to build culture form there and flip the others. Otherwise, after the first battle, you will realize how many you need, but you have to land to get an idea. Then you can decide to use devious forms of warfare before a

I just had a great scout. He had a defense of 3, and destroyed an AMM. Well, was destroyed by an AMM, but that's about the best thing it could do, staying idle as it was in that unsuspecting altarian sector...

I love tiny maps. It reminds me of chess. Particularly when each race has only one star system. I wish there was an option to have no yellow stars, not even rare, except for those owned by races. Each turn means you have to take important decisions. The ai doesn't seem to handle it as well as on bigger maps, though, except the Drengins who like the quick go to the jugular. It seems 1.03 ruined my strategy to win on tiny/maso btw. The ai won't give me lots of money for aphrodisiacs now, only

There are still a few issues where the ai needs some bonuses. I finished a game on Genius, where the ai used an AMM to destroy one of my mightier ships. Namely, a scout. :/ Personnally, I think Ctr-N is cheesy, because "As for cntrl-n, that's not cheese. It simply saves time, since everyone put in a bad spot would simply go through the rigors of starting." is wrong. I don't restart. That may sound silly, but at least you learn a lot from bad starts (even though you eventuall

A zooming lens in the diplomatic window to make fine tuning of money/influence easier: Adjust normally, then when you are near the point you want to reach, instead of having to type, use a lens which gives smaller steps.

I tried something similar on masochistic tiny, rare yellow suns. The suns were so rare that no race had two stars before we started bashing one another and the minors. I didn't trade diplomatic translators early, but just about everything else. It worked very fine. It wouldn't win the game all by itself, though, but provided huge cash flows and lots of techs (I researched about 23 techs in 90+ I had at the end). I think this is very efficient except you have to be careful to get NanoMetal Co

What map size do you play? You should probably start churning out colony ships immediately: You have 1000bc, so you can expend more than you make for a while. You should either use a higher military spending (even 100% can work on normal till you have a few ships) or lease-buy one or two colony ships. Then you should go for impulse drives after diplomacy, since your ships will move faster. Also, send scouts to find the yellow stars. The ai knows where they are, you don't.

A neat way to handle disadvantages is to make them cost more and more: To get 1 additional good pick costs 1 disadvantage, the second costs 2 disadvantage points (total 3 disadvantages needed), etc. That way if you want +4 picks, you need 10 disadvantages. That works well in RPGs. This said, I don't think it would be very interesting in GalCiv because it would be too unbalancing.

What was the difficulty? Did you play with all the ais or had you removed some of them? Were they lost on some clusters? I never saw something that fast, but then I mostly play tiny, with rare planets, so my influence can't grow fast.

It happens on higher level AIs too. Another thing I'd like to suggest is that the AI sueing for peace should ask for peace for all the alliance. There is currently no multipartite peace traty available, you have to go through 2 or 3 separate treaties.

Starting position makes for a lot, but you can counter some of its effects: Playing scattered helps, and tiny maps don't suffer from starting position (particularly with rare yellow stars, since your spare colony ship will probably be useless anyway-). I think it is good to play by the position given. Right now for instance, I play a large clustered map and ended up in a corner far from everyone else. I have some stars, it should be easy to turtle in, but trade is very hard to get by, si

"There is no sense of a "community"." Go on apolyton.net/forums and see that it's false (of course I can't go there now for hardware and other reasons but...). There is little point in having big scores anyway. You'll get less points for a tiny/crippling win than for a huge/normal, but it will be harder to win the former. So people who like smaller maps like me are not encouraged to post on the metaverse (I'd lower my score because I like small maps...). So you see, I have a team spi

I don't want the ai to win technologically. If that makes it into the game, please let me disable that option while allowing me to win technologically. To me, the tech victory is just an "end game", like in civ you could go on playing after winning by spaceship, but this simply showed you had reached the end game. The tech victory is a postmark for me. I will use it because the situation is a stalemate and I don't want to pursue another way to win the game. You can offer a draw in chess

Scenarios could indeed rock in that game. Particularly if they added a few techs restricted to one race, that would allow HUGE modding possibilities (think Civ2 variety of scenarios thanks to that...).

I never restart. I get killed quite often because of that, but, heh, that's a challenge. Even getting 4 stars and none other for 4 sectors around me, I played. I had 3 nice resources in the neighbouring sector. Then of course, when the UP decided 2 modules on a starbase was a maximum, that screwed me even more... I am happy if I am not stuck in a corner, and that's about it. It depends on the size of the map, too. On tiny maps/rare yellow stars, you can be happy with anythin

The ai doesn't accept the fact that you want to be a policeman of the universe. If they make peace with you, you will attack them as soon as they start making war with someone else. Thus it is, to them, no use making peace with you, as you will prevent them from fighting their own wars. You effectively prevent them from doing what they want, even though they leave you alone. It is perfectly normal that they see you as a treacherous bully. Of course, they don't understand you do t

'That's just very unrealistic..' Did you meet a dreadnought commander recently? :P Maxed starbase have overlord killer mark II on them, which are hard to destroy but not impossible. The most probable thing is the Yor have several military resources with juicy starbases on top. Plus they may have more techs than you that increase attack/damage, but that's account for at most 10% lat ein the game?

On 1, I also want to point out that it is a good thing IMO that the ai doesn't gang against the player. It is bad that they build 4 different starbases in the same sector before they start building modules, or that they send a ship out of orbit so it is easier to pick.
