I still cant see how you can finish a gigantic game in a few hours if you actually play the game (I can understand how to achieve tech victory by doing not much more than hitting the turn key but I already have to work for a living and so I like my gaming to be fun)

Ohhh /wave Alf Melin :)
Welcome to the competition guys :)
works fine for me :)
If World War II is your thing check out Hearts of Iron....
I sometimes get the game "hanging" and I have found saving and reloading works to clear it as well - not sure if that would help your situation.
Well Calvin often imagines himself as Spaceman Biff so it is quite appropriate. Calvin and Hobbes has permeated much of the English speaking world. Even Australians like it, if only for the pictures....
I like the vaqriety - the small maps give a far greater sense of immediacy - attacking *this* planet ios a big deal and will change the game. On the large maps I quite like the sense of scale - it can take 20 turns to get a fleet together within strike distance of the enemy.
Chris: Double clikc on your survey vessel. Choose "auto survey" from the command list. It seems to do pretty well and is a hell of a lot more convenient than trying to find all the space junk manually.
Even with my limited play times I can knock off a gigantic game within about a wekk - call it 15 hours of play or so. To the extent there is a "trick" - use governors, macro manage your fleet builds (using the governor screen again), avoid wars, put your survey ship(s) on auto survey (I do this for any map size).
Given that the reason given for the scoring system was to get people to submit games and allow them to tweak the AI it is pretty crazy if the only games they have to work off are ones played on gigantic galaxies where the tactics and strategy are so different and the gme is more forgiving.
Yes you can load billions of your people onto troop ships and send them off to die and still be "good"!
OK managed to get my score even lower with a challenging win in a small galaxy. I would have called it a military victory (as I won by invading a planet) but I seemed to get cultural victory as I was in an alliance /shrug. Went with War Party (50 hp), +50 weapons, +30 solidering an +10 pop growth, seemed to work ok. Got a lot of the trade goods and that, plus invading a lot, kept me up to date from a research perspective.
Grats on hitting number one Europeans!1
You are correct - it means no ships in orbit
Doh hit return I jsut won on Challenging, tiny - got a mighty 118 points and submitting it actually lowered my overall score - I am going to play each size of galaxy on challenging and see how I go. I decided this time to be military (I tend to be a research/assimilate player normally) so chose war party (50 HP) and repair ability and went all out for tranports (propulsion -> cold fusion -> impulse drives) and battle axes (defence -> defenders - > shields). It worked q
/sigh all that and I score a lousy 4k - just rushed to finish as the end game bores me.
Hopefully I will actually get to do some gaming this weekend so I can finsih my current game.
The key ones (IMHO) are a little dependent on the galaxy size. For small you need to get universal translaters. For large propulsion theory - cold fusion - impulse drive (speed and transports) is pretty important. I always grab trade early on too.
It was more messed up by the debilitating effects of having to fight the Great War (parts I and II) than by the French.
You can always make your own empire, maybe allow in people from Jersey, Cardigan and any other place named for an item of clothing?
Be easy enough to do - just run the existing algorithm but have it check against the previous cumulative score and if the result is lower just add 1 (or some other low number) to the previous score...
Ohh I see we are in 4th place (no thanks to me and I wont be making any more progress on my current game ubtil the weekend as there are some beers that need drinking tonight - got a 6 pack of Macs Gold in the fridge!!!). Gone Golders has 92 members!!! /gasp
