Civ wasn't the first 4X computer game. I believe that honour belongs to Reach for the Stars, but someone will probably correct me. I still play the 2000 redo of RFTS from time to time.

I'd add Reach for the Stars and Stars! to that list. Each game has it's own strengths. Trying to include them all in one game is likely to produce an unplayable mismash (this might help explain MOO3).
