Help with influence in Strategies Stardock Forums

Playing with the computer AI set to bright and it seems that very early on their influence in the sectors is alot greater than mine. How does the AI get such a jump? What are they doing? Building News networks early or going straight to research labs? I think I am keeping up with them on colonies and population... (read the encyclopedia entry but that does not seem to help, I may be missing something)
