If you are wedded to the Elemental name (which I can totally understand) then I think Elemental 2: Fallen Enchantress is a no brainer. I really can't see any good arguments against adding the 2 from a sales point of view. You want to make it very clear that FE is more than just an expansion or stand alone expansion to WoM. I am certain that calling it Elemental 2: FE will increase sales relative to just Elemental: FE. While some have a good point that they look visually si

In fact balance is somewhat necessary in order to have interesting choices. If things are really out of balance then that quickly leads to most choices only having on
I am obviously a big MOM fan but... Do you know anyone who has ever lost a game of Master of Magic? On any setting? MOM is a classic game but I don't think I've ever heard MOM, AI, and smart used together before. The AI didn't actually play the game in the sense I think you're thinking.
With the unofficial 'insecticide' patch the AI is actually halfway decent so long as you play o
Hard to disagree with any of that. I'm cautiously optimistic about FE based on what I've heard and that means I'm confident that FE will be a better game than WoM (regardless of how good or bad one thinks WoM is). That means I'm hoping it will be quite possible to be meh about WoM but ecstatic about FE. Time will tell!
Sounds like an escort should be pretty much mandatory, it is for the AI in Civ5 if for no other reason than the fact that the human player is likely to prey on new AI settlements.
Indeed. It does not. You will almost certainly not like FE if you find WOM "boring" at this point.
I'm puzzled. Perhaps Frogboy is just talking out of frustration in which case I can sympathise, the negative reaction to WOM would be enough to make anyone slightly bitter, even if they understand some of the reasons behind that negative reaction. But if this is meant as a genuine comment then a mistake is bein
I'm hoping they wait until early next year myself. Polish the game until it gleams, don't send it out until it is ready.
HenriHakl has the right of it I believe. If you want people to be able to mod in a few extra spells without having to also modify EVERY existing spell in the game to update counter spells etc then you need it to be done through applying multiple generic tags to each spell. Having said that I think there is a benefit in also allowing a spell to specify that it is a counter to a specific spell by name for a few special cases there there are very powerful or special spel
Random events are win. Random events with advance portents as Tohron says are also win (arguably even more win, after all few things spice up the game than the knowledge of impending problems, particularly if they come with opportunities if you handle it well). The ability to turn random events off is also critical of course as not everyone likes them. If there are some truely brutal random events (eg the Borg turning up in Star Trek Birth of the Federation, gg if you aren'

The damn computer always thinks it is a great idea to make demands or threats against you just because you have a "seemingly" weaker military presence. They do not take into account the production power that you have, nor your technological/magical might. I always found it so damned annoying when I'd get threatened by someone who
I've been playing Master of Magic recently (last played back in the 90s). Got to say, great game still, truely amazing. If that game was released today with a modern engine but the same concepts, content, etc and perhaps a bit better AI then I think it would easily sell at least 10% of the number of copies Civ 5 sold, potentially 20-30% despite being less main stream. Even 10% would be half a million+ sales. Sure take out those getting it for free from WoM but I'm guessing WoM was luc
Ditto. And while it is true I had high hopes for WoM at about this stage and was then bitterly disappointed, I also had considerable concerns about WoM at about this stage. With FE the approach being taken allays many of these concerns so I am cautiously optimistic.
LOL. Great to see people having fun... and I got to say I guessed the result wrong!
Solitaire. QED not all singleplayer games need AI.
True... and yet totally a strawman because quite plainly EWoM, the game in question, does need an AI. I played Galactic Civilizations I shortly after release and it was a little bit meh. To be honest I think GC2 was also a bit lacking in soul (helped by some of the later expansions). BUT as Frogboy admitted while GC1 may have had issues it did have AI which could give

Dwarf Fortress is a fully engaging game with an unbelievable map generator where lots of different aspects lead to different games every time you play it - but it just looks like crap until you get used to it. On the other hand, E-WoM is not engaging, has a very shallow random map generator, and no matter what the world generates it plays the same way every sin
Great scott! At core we agree then Jam3, with relatively minor peripheral areas which we seem happy to disagree on. Astounding... this might be a first for the interweb! [e digicons][/e] More troubling though, it doesn't really matter if we agree, what matters is what Derek and co think and agree on. We can only hope that they are paying attention and fully aware of these issues. Cheers.
If you pose the question "can this new team design a good game" then the answer is yes, depending on their creativity. If however you ask the question "can they design a good game within the limitations of the engine" then you need answers about what has been fixed in the original engine before you can answer that question. And that is truly a complex math/programming/software engineering question with a binary answer.
Right, I ge

"just a matter of having the right design" is the part which stops 95% of games made from being classics. I see designing a GOOD game as a very difficult task and I also see it as the core problem with WoM. The engine no doubt
