The most common addition to this is that if it was raining when he left, then he takes the elevator all the way to the 17th floor (with the aid of the umbrella he took with him in the morning). Of course this makes you wonder, why doesn't he always carry a pen or a pocketknife or some other useful medium-length stick?

And then there's: Blifter (blift-'r): a blogger who just reposts content from other articles.
1) Evolutionist. 2) Realist. 3) Pragmatist 4) Capitalist 5) Pacifist, but also being a pragmatist and a realist, pugilism is always an option.
a few more... Arghument (ARG-yu-m'nt): a debate with someone who cannot or will not acknowledge the validity of any of your points, which you ultimately give up on out of frustration. Blinker (blink-'r): A blogger whose posts consist almost entirely of links to other peoples' writing, generating no worthwhile original material. Cornsellor (korn-sell-'r): someone who gives "advice" that is trite, obvious, and cheap. D
I think you're overstating the value of your original commentary. "Trying to help protect children"? The sum total of your actual advice was "You should be more careful." That adds about as much real value to a conversation as a week-old used piece of bubblegum. Throw in the surrounding text which was arrogant and demeaning and your value moves to somewhere around a crumpled, dirty gum wrapper that's been stuck to a dead fish for a month.
mignuna, I expect that most people who read it liked it, but are not clever enough to come up with anything that seems like a worthy addition. I will make the attempt, lame though it might be: Blooger - (bluh-ger): A blog writer who is unceasingly, obnoxiously snotty. Wingnut - (wing-nut): someone who is at the far end (doesn't matter which) of the political spectrum. Dispewt - (di-spute): an argument characteri
Miki, you said (and I quote) "ummm, how much detail about this person did you know before you entrusted her with your children's lives? That'd be the day some psycho frig-stick would ever enter my own home, let alone be left alone with my kids. Holy crap. Maybe be more vigilant when it comes to questions to ask any prospective babysitter." Just try and pass that off as helpful advice. It sounds like a condescending, arrogant, what-th
Jeblackstar, if the family presence were stronger, minors would either not get hold of guns in the first place, would be found out and have them taken away, or would receive proper training in the use and handling of firearms, and would receive much more of the direction they need to avoid becoming the kind of minor that joins a gang and goes out shooting into traffic for fun. Obviously there are other significant impediments to progr
To approach from the medical side of things, snoring is bad. If the snoring has gotten progressively louder and more obnoxious over the course of time, it's likely that it will develop into sleep apnea, if it hasn't already. Your husband should get a sleep study done and see about getting a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), which will eliminate the snoring, or getting some minor surgery (such as LAUP--Laser Assisted Uvulo-Palatoplas
"Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. "Briefing for a Descent into Hell" by Doris Lessing the "Canopus in Argos: Archives" series by Doris Lessing "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut "A Clockwork Orange" by Anthony Burgess Not nearly as deep or thought-provoking, but very fun in a nastily surprising sort of way, Short stories of Roald Dahl (though of course his children's stuff is also classic). Also not nearly as deep or tho
Anyway, to answer your original question regarding the scenario: I think that the US would: (a) level the afghan/pakistan border with conventional bombs. (b) demand that Iran immediately dismantle all of its nuclear capabilities, and if the demand is not met with immediate compliance, level any suspected nuclear facility in Iran. (c) demand that Egypt, Saudi, Arabia, Iran, Syria, and the PLO denounce the activity of the terrorists
Actually, Draginol, if you come up and punch someone in the nose and then just stand there, the most likely reaction (in my opinion) is "Ow! What the hell did you do that for?" So yes, the first response IS to try and understand your motives.
Frankly I think it's sad that taking responsibility for your own actions has become an unusual and admirable course of action. Ducking your responsibility should be the exceptional and shameful course, not the common and normal one.
Well, this is going to sound like nitpicking, and it probably is, really, but I'll just point out that your friend was not "arrested and convicted", but "arrested and charged". He's not convicted of anything until the jury at his trial says "We find the defendant guilty as charged."
Mikimouse, you're trying to invent possible rationalizations that COULD apply to some HYPOTHETICAL individuals. However, the story mentions that these two deserters are 25 and 19 years old, and that they are Army Privates, not Reservists. IF they had heart defects, then they should have requested a physical to prove it and then received medical discharge. Or, their physical exam at the time of enlistment would have disqualified them from active d
Too competitive? Nah. On the other hand, your serve is illegal (ball must be behind the end of the table, and must be tossed straight upward from an open palm); your grip is poor; your net is clearly sagging in the middle; your table does not appear level; your stance heavily favors your forehand, leaving your backhand side exposed; any movement toward your backhand side will probably be hampered by the curb; and your game will be affected by
I got low on everything, except moderate on Schizoid and Histrionic. Which is interesting because Schizoid is summed up as "genuinely likes to be alone" and Histrionic is "Needs to be the center of attention". So I guess I might have a tendency to lavish attention upon myself...?
Brad said: "Why can't, for instance, me and my friends get together and pay for a newspaper advertisement or TV commercial explaining why we are for Candidate X? Why should WE get censored but Howard Stern or NY Times editorialists can espouse their opinions without limit?" I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm mistaken, but from what I've seen, there is nothing preventing you from doing just that. Certainly you can take out the newspaper ad with
So, finding a dealer involves shutting down the computer?? (The "Dealer Locator screen (center)" referenced in the caption doesn't appear to be present; instead there is the standard shutdown dialog.)
Apparently I don't check in often enough to carry on anything resembling a conversation in these comments... however, I will reply to MadPoet41 (BTW, quoting doesn't seem to function for me either): MP41 said, in response to my phrase "Making the world a safer place": Anytime human beings are being slaughtered~no matter which side you are on~the world IS NOT a safer place. I hope you would agree that the less slaughter is going on
"An idea is an idea", it's true. But intelligence will give you a lot of reasonable-seeming ideas that only experience will tell you don't work.
Why should Barbara Streisand have more influence over who becomes President than say Bill Gates? Why should either of them have more influence than I do? One citizen, one vote.
And yet the lack of reform is merely leaving power in the hands of millionaires who can buy someone's way into an office. I'd rather go the other way and try to come up with some way to make all campaigning free. Just like the incumbents in Congress can use the Congressional Post Office to send out all their mailings for free, any political flyer should cost the campaigner 0 cents to mail. Of course, that opens up whole new cans of e
To give you some actual ideas for answers to your daughter's questions.... SOME of the people over there don't want us there. Many of them did and do want us. The ones that don't want us are generally people who were better off under the rule of a man who thought nothing of killing hundreds of his own subjects at a time, of stealing other mens' wives for his own pleasure, of torture and suffering as an evening's diversion. We went over ther
Brad, I would be very interested to hear your reasoning on why the WP-reading-MSWord-format analogy is so obviously flawed.
