I like this game because it is like a complex board game. Whenever I lose focus on a game, I increase the difficultly of the next game. I've found that at higher difficultly levels, it is hard to achieve the type of operational superiority that allows you to break focus. I like to use the governors, also even on the smaller maps I tend not to worry about protected star systems (star systems that have 2 or more sectors into a protected star cluster) and I concentrate on not leaving app

Here's a question for the team. I'm playing a tough medium galaxy as a particularly bad actor - even the Drendin and the Yor can't stand me. (Though I just eliminated the Drendin). Now the remaining majors are the Yorian Slugs, the Altarian Boy Scouts, and the Yor. (Of course, the Yor are doing nothing and pose no threat with their 2 star systems.) Here's the problem, the Space Slugs and the do-gooders are in an alliance. The Yorians have a signficant military advantage
I usually pick on people I have a technical advantage on or outgun significantly - my pop would beat theirs in a fair fight. I've found that taking soldiering +10, exploring with a scout, and inventing soldiering techs gives me all the edge I need. I also invade a lot so that I couldn't afford the tactics. I'd recommend skipping them unless you are in a special situation - i.e. endgame. My favorite invasion tactic is the Terror Star in the end game. I've been told it can hurt
You serial number should be on the CD case. Happy raiding!
I'm sick of these darn exploding sheep in the tap room. I'm drinking Fosters until they go away. That way I won't care when by beer gets blow off the counter... :p ~SDC~
I finally finished the huge galaxy - don't like culture. I had 2.5 trillion pop, but I couldn't close it out. I got bored and crushed the remaining Torians and Altarians. I did show some restraint and only used the terror star on the Torian homeworld. In the future, I think it faster military conquest for me. I'd like to have a tech victory, just to see the rest of the tech tree, but I doubt I'll have the patience. Happy Raiding, Cypher ~SDC~
Hey, whose responsive for the exploding sheep in the tavern? Nearly spilled my beer I did.... I'm currently plundering my way through a huge galaxy. I've launched a 'Slaves are people too' cultural campaign to take planets intact. Aliens attracted by a great forced labor market have been swarming to my side. It has required a good amount of starbases though. How do I determine the maintenance on a starbase? Does it go up per module? Happy raiding.... Cypher
Alliances work against the AI as well. In half games I've played I've seen a Arcean, Altarian, Torian alliance. In each class, I'm stayed neutral, neutralized the Yorians and Drendins and then exploited the alliance. When you attack one weak power, the other senates drag the powers into the war and they've begged me for peace. I make peace, attack again, and make peace - until I'm taken everything I want and ruined their economies. Since alliances hurt everyone equally, I'm never
I have done pretty well with the smaller maps, but now that I am playing my first 'Huge' map, I'm winning but I'm finding the management more difficult. Perhaps it might be helpful to practice your management skills on a smaller map where there is less going on.
To add to my prior comment, how about this as an informal scoring system? A win is a win. People have argued about which victories is harder or easier. People are also always unhappy about the College Football BCS system which has millions and millions of dollars riding on its results -- if they cannot come up with a fool proof system it is unfair for us to expect Stardock to do so. The a win is a win principal eliminates the case for playing the game past when it was 'won' for the
Have you guys tried the terror stars yet? It's great fun blowing up star systems. I built 4 in one game and went on an Altarian and Arceans extermination campaign. I loved original Star Wars movies... though I am not so fond of the new ones. Good luck with the empire! ~SDC~
I probably not the person to be championing this as I realize I've had a huge advantage over those who started earlier in the metaverse, though I am probably a more typical case for a newbie than the newbie who cranks off 10k+ games. My score is inflated compared to more experienced players, but I am hardly dominating the metaverse. I'm coming up the difficulty levels -- I am currently playing a Huge/Normal game, so my score might be higher for this one game, but I'm also gett
The Altarians seem to be a pain in the butt no matter what my alignment. On a small map where PQ is critical, I would always take the evil choice. On a bigger map, I tend toward good if I have a good aligned neighbor that is threatening. Good also seems to make cultural victories easier. Otherwise, I just try to avoid being sooo bad that the goodies declare war on me before I'm ready. ~SDC~
Also, you'll lose an election if you are too far in debt. This causes morale to fall. This is a common problem for me when playing the war party, cause wars can be expensive - partially when you need to move fast to keep a stronger opponent offguard.
How come blowing star systems up with a terror star doesn't make you evil? I blew up 7 systems murdering over 360 billion major beings, but apparently that pales in comparison to calling in some exteriminators to take care of a worm problem on an uninhabited planet... It's embarassing when a pirate ends up good... since I had to kiss up to the Altarians right up to the point where I blew up thier homeworld. Anyway, the scoring system doesn't seem to be the 1.4x version now, I
I play on a laptop and need to go online when the game ends to submit scores. With previous versions you had to be online to submit a score on your last turn. Actually, the current version seems to act like it's submitting a score when you're not online. The submission should take a minute and then return a confirmation. You need to have a score for your empire. ;) It looks like even one person could do fairly well on the rankings, at least better than they would rank better than on
When you play on a small map there aren't a lot of good planets on common. If you want more, change the setting to abundant. On a small map, I'll settle a 14. I won't settle a 13. The 15+ theory assumes you'll improve the Planet Quality. Good luck!
J4 thanks for the advise. I did pull the game out. The Drendin attacked in mass a few turns later. I saw them coming and launched a massive counteract after seeing they left there planets were undefended. My faster ships took two of there best systems while there were cleaning up by corvettes and I was able to sue for pease before they took any of my systems. Your advise worked well...
I just used them to destory the Arceans who were so far ahead militarily I would never catch them. Diplomacy is for wimps. Besides Arceans taste sort of like chicken, so barbecuing their systems is always a good options. For limited experience, Terror Stars move to slowly for any map bigger than small or addressing a cluster on a bigger map. Every alien has watched the holovids of Star Wars, I've lost two to battleships - on had +9 defense, the other +11 - both were lost on f
If you are so far ahead, the terror star is a fun use of constructors. My last game featured 3 Arceans planets in a triangle on space apart. They were much stronger than me militarily, but when they lost 3 planets in a turn and their capital a few turns later, they were begging to surrender. Be warned that Terror Stars are expensive to complete and that everyone in the galaxy seems to have watched the Star Wars holovids. I had a terror star with a defense bonus of +11 destroyed in
Two very minor glitches: Last night I finished a game on my laptop offline. The metaverse submission screen game up and I submitted to see what would happen. Almost immediately, it told me my score had been reported though obviously it hadn't. (Screen returned immediately) No big deal since I was able to report my score this morning. Here's on I thought was funny - the Drendin declared war on me for attacking there ally. I had eliminated them several turns before. I
The game is great and the support is even more amazing. I'm amazed that any software company is so responsive to customers, dedicated to improving their products, and able to so quickly fix defects. People comment on how this in unusual in a gaming company, it is unusual for any software company and I think that says a lot about Stardock. Thanks for both producing a outstanding game and your devotion to improving it. I'm sure you sucesses are not and will not be limited to Galactic C
I thought I was applying for membership, but I seem to have already joined the G.R.0.S.S. empire. I rooted for the governement in E.T. The only aliens I intend to leave alive are those I can't manage to kill. I hope no one minds I'm here. Michael ([email protected])
I am a new player, but I am enjoying having the metaverse to compare by play to others. (I have a older laptop with no 3-D video card and this is by far my favorite game, so I'll probably be around for a while.) I am not really concerned about where I rank and I would like to submit any my scores win or lose. My request would be no negative scores, the lowest score should be zero. I would find it discouraging to actually lose points in the metaverse and would be less inclined to sub
I'd admit that I was getting cocky since for my fifth game I crushed a challenging level game a couple months after getting frigates. Now, I'm amazed at anyone who can win on the more difficult levels. I am playing a tough level game and I can't keep up in anything even with more planets, now I've even fallen behind on planets. I have two advantages an incredible diplomatic skill (+60 starting plus diplomatic translators and a starbase) that allowed me to trade diplo translaters, stell
