Some interesting points here. I take the backfill approach first learned in Birth Of The Federation.....I try and colonise PQ15+ as far away from Earth as I can as early as I can. I know borders & territory in GalCiv aren't the same as in BOTF and Civ3 (for example) but it works for me. The more I play, the more value I find myself placing on starbases. Resource mining bases need no further comment, but I habitually place starbases in the orbit of *ALL* of my colonies. Even the humblest colony away from your trading routes can benefit from Factories (Production bonuses) on a starbase, and you can never have enough culture improvements IMO ;) Once you get a few starbases with trade upgrades on your trade routes the income really starts to add up too. <br
