2005 is a great year for gamers as a whole, with the release of the highly-touted Xbox 360 headlining the news (and, consequently, the temporally inferior PS3) for the brutes of the gaming crowd and new graphics card technology and big-name game titles for the intellectually elite [Ha.] PC gamers. Far and wide the most important event of 2005 is the release of Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2 , the se

After reading the first half of these comments, I got disgusted and actually felt forced into replying. I'm not necessarily a fan of Rush, but generally if I listen to him for long enough, I don't get the impression that he is stupid, nor do I get the impression that he is a vicodin-addicted bigot who would only make a statement to offend people (without it trying to make a point). I'm utterly in amazement that so many of you people interpret Rush's statement, " It's like I said -- 40 people d

The video games we play have advanced seemingly exponentially in terms of their technological complexity, and therefore the complexity necessary to create such advanced pieces of software. Why then hasn’t the immersion of these games, on average, advanced alongside of everything else? When I pick up a new game to play, I feel just as much outside of the game I’m playing as I did to games I played years ago; this fact disturbs me greatly. Why should I feel as little involvement and immersion w

In the last decade, video games have become more and more like movies than their old-age makers could ever have even thought of. We have games like Halo 2 which are so big, expensive, and popular that it can generate more money in a single day than any blockbuster movie could ever hope to bring in on its opening day. One thing that is becoming really hard to do with modern games, though, is making a really “good” game; and, by good, I mean fun to play and experience . The actual so

" I have very similar specs to yours (only 1 gig ram, crappy audio,pci-e 6800gt) and the game runs perfectly smoothly on my computer. I'd be inclined to say it's an AGP bandwidth or memory problem of some sort. " You have to give more information than that. When you say it runs "perfectly smooth," what are your settings? I can run the game perfectly smooth at 40-50fps when I have everything at high (except texture quality, which is at medium, and FSAA which is at 2x). And

Excuse me, but I never once said I faulted EA for designing a game that would take advantage of future hardware. I don't know if you read the little tidbit where I referenced DOOM 3 having an "Ultra" mode where it would be necessary to have a 512mb VRAM card to play smoothly, but they were very candid about this requirement in a number of places. And when I load DOOM 3 up, the default setting for texture resolution is HIGH, not Ultra. My problem with Battlefield 2 is that when I load th

The review will come eventually, but for now I'm just going to rant about a few things regarding the recently released Battlefield 2. Published by everyone's favorite draconian institution Electronic Arts (Remember kids, Challenge Everything , except the publishers) and developed by Dice . Let me start off by saying one thing: Battlefield 2 is an absolutely incredible game. I might even dare to say that it

I've had a series of interesting revelations and plans throughout the course of the day, which, for the record, didn't even begin until 4:30pm. The first of which, though not necessarily chronological in occurrence, is about change and style, in a few different combinations. And, as you read this, don't mind whatever internal gaydar you may be running at the moment; if it starts flashing, beeping, or playing some ridiculous pop song at any point in your reading this post, just pay it no m

Thought I'd post of one of my personal favorite blog entries for the JoeUser crowd. So here's my story of what is, without question, the best date I ever had; though, to be honest, it wasn't really a date. A date would imply that I went out somewhere with a girl, but instead I just went to this girl's house with the premise of spending Memorial Day together. Backstory : This girl and I had been "together" for what may have been fourth months at this point. We become an "o

My site, Polycat.net , has been without a focus for a long time now, as my pathetic excuse for a blog has been the sole purpose it has been serving since... well, it's existence. The time for change is now. In the coming week(s), I will be working on a new system to support the new focus on short stories. Once the system is in place, I will be writing a new short story every week, and releasing it on the site (I will also update this blog

Alright, for some reason I can't edit this at the moment, but as soon as I can, I'll format it properly. In the meantime, for those who want to read it, you can find a formatted version my site's version of the entry: http://www.polycat.net/?p=1039 Grrr.

I woke up three times that day. And, like every other day, I woke up to screaming -- a screaming which slowly escalated and transformed into an electric pulse. Groaning as I rolled over onto my back, I tried to open my eyes; I failed, and threw my arm back against the vibrant pulsating clock behind my head. Silence. Not even a second later, the omnipresent noise started up again, more powerful, increased in its anger from a forced silence. I denied its voice for a second ti

I plan to get "back to my roots" with articles more focused on game design, development, and critique of popular games and mods, but every now and then, I may update with a little more personal posts. As for now, enjoy this one. Contrary to the name of this post, this really isn't going to be focused on a pretty girl . There could be some overarching reasoning to my naming the post this, but I don't plan on fleshing that reason out. I'm probably going to be write less

I was looking forward to Half-Life 2 with all my heart, and now that I’ve finished it, I’m actually a bit let-down. I found the story to be kind of… empty. I also was disappointed by the lack of enemies to fight the biggest and most fun enemies to fight were the fewest in number. I was also disappointed that the game only introduced three new weapons from the original (though the gravity gun was fun), and took some of the coolest weapons from the original out completely (all four of the alien we

I'm using Konfabulator right now, due to one thing: its "widgets" all conform to that glossy look, and are all incredibly high quality. DesktopX's objects are great, but really lack any conformity between sets (and any conformity usually relies on a "theme," such as the Killer theme, as opposed to a set of objects which can be a "one-size fits all" thing). That said, Mormegil's Core set of objects is just what I'm looking for, and they're shaping up nicely. Though, I would like a blate

I know I said I was done blogging here, but I made this entry in my primary blog over at Polycat.net (my primary/personal site), so I decided to mirror this entry here, since I really liked it. Anyhoo, enjoy. I'm feeling a bit philosophical this morning, or reflective, nostalgic, or whatever you want to call it. And, as I was on my way to work, I was thinking about my own self, my personality, my character, my "inner-being," or, once again, whatev

It's one of your little "Quirks!" It's far from being a bad thing; unless, of course, you take it to an extreme. I have some really bad days with my minor OCD that can become really annoying; I've spent 15-20 minutes before just checking to make sure that a faucet was turned off, or a door was locked. It's annoying, but I've come to accept it. I generally try to hide it from people (It's a pride thing, not a "I don't know what they'll think of me" thing) and I do a good job for the most part
