Help! in Galactic Civilizations I Stardock Forums

I just started playing GC and find that I still get my butt kicked. The only difference is how long it takes for the other civs to kill me off. My question is can anyone give me some good tips to get started strong and stay that way? I've tried focusing more on tech while building colony ships with no focus on social projects and slowly adjusting as time goes on but have still had poor results. PS, I'm working on beginner mode which makes it even more painful! <br
