I think the real nitpick here is not the units and how similar they are, but resource gathering and base building. In particular, Starcraft had vastly different base building ideas, and the resource gathering was fairly dissimilar. Who cares if the units match up pretty closely... if the way you get to each unit has such a different feel, it makes them play radically differently. But while the 'feel' of the races is very similar just like other contemporary games like Total Annihilation

The problem with detailed ground combat is that it becomes difficult to maintain the pace of the game. It's hard enough to direct your armada of ships... now you want to try and juggle FIFTEEN LAND WARS also? Moving a few units on every planet every turn? It just becomes a micromanagement nightmare. This is a bug report/feature request. Stardock should not require a user to go to an obscure menu item (Refresh App Data) in order to tell me what software needs updating. In particular, Stardock is able to auto-update itself... why does it not auto-update that info too? I spent a good 15 minutes wandering around the forums before I found instructions that told me about that menu item. Just a suggestion. ~SDC~
Two questions: A) Will 1.1 support saved build orders, so I can set a build order from EVERY item available in the game, and have the build order flesh itself out as I research the needed technologies? B) Are there any 'recommended' build order strategies or threads discussing such?
