I only play DA now that I have it. I like the extras, such as the different planet types and the race abilities, and I guess I would find it confusing to go back and forth, and would miss the new aspects of the game.

I am also getting the Out of Memory crash, happening when I try to save the game. I have been doing an "alt-S" at the end of every turn so that I do not lose so much play time, but that is a two-edged sword since it gives the bug more "opportunities" to crash the game. Also, frustratingly, as pointed out above, the crash seems to obliterate previous "saves" in the process. I have 2 Gig of RAM, Vista, AMG Athlon X2, and am running the latest DA beta.
I just started playing as the Torians, due to the "breeder" super ability. I never chose playing them before because I thought they looked dorky ... so I put a picture of my cat in their place instead, and name the ship classes "Jaguar," "Bobcat," "Tiger," etc., so that jazzes things up. I'll tell you, that super-breeder ability is nice.
I agree with those who have pointed out the "penalty for good" feature of the present system. As some have said, chosing good is equivalent to playing one difficulty level higher ... and it does not seem to have the kind of balance I assume the developers are aiming for. The balance needs to be addressed in the two ways that "good" is disadvantagaeous: 1) In the "choose one of three" events, "good" is almost always either accepting a penalty or forfeiting an advantage. This should be evened
I appreciate the observations by Mumblefratz. This should help us figure out what is going on with the scoring. Up to this point, I am generally surprised (either pleasantly or unpleasantly) by the score at the end of each game. It would be nice to at least be able to have some sense of how I was doing as the game progressed!
It is enjoyable to play all three alignments, though I personally like playing good the most. I have always wondered why SD has consistently made good the "ugly stepsister" of the game, since any discussion I have seen (such as this thread) ranks it a solid third and a serious disadvantage to play. Does the development team believe that the three alignments are balanced (maybe we are not seeing something?), or is it unbalanced on purpose?
I got an unjustified cheat flag on one of my games, too. It was DA 1.50X, and I was told by others that *all* the games of that particular release were thus flagged ... which is a bummer. So there it sits in my Metaverse list, coutning as a game played, I guess, but zero points counted. I figure it is just "tough luck" for us, otherwise people who *really* cheated could claim innocence to get unjustifi
I usually do not go for tech victory, but there is another reason you might want to leave it turned on: It gives the AI another path to victory, making the game that much more interesting for you. One time I was minding my own business conquering the galaxy, when suddenly the message comes up that one of the empires I had not yet gotten to was working on the tech victory. I had to quickly make peace in my current wars and go after that empire, trying especially to conquer his planets that had hi
No, the first half of the tech lets you colonize and build, but only build at 50%. The second half kicks your production up to 100%. Building goes *real* slow before you get the second part of the tech, so maybe that's what you are experiencing.
Yeah, the Jagged Knife event is just as bad or worse. You lose a ton of your planets to a new empire that forms out of thin air. As Vinraith said, turning off mega events does the trick. I suppose it is a matter of taste, if you find radical changes an exciting challenge or a frustrating game breaker. It is a nice way to vary the game.
I'm wondering at what point the power plants and research coordinators become useful? In other words, if you only have one factory, I would think it makes more sense to use an open tile for a second factory rather than to go with a power plant, especially at the lower levels of the plant (only 10% production increase). How many factories/labs should be built before going with the "enhancer" building? Have any of you "number cruchers" out there figured out the "sweet spot" for building the enhanc
Judging by the replies and interaaction generated by the OP, I think we can at least say that computer games *may* be a catalyst for community and social interaction! Many good points have been made, but let me speak to the OP regarding his concern for balancing "fun" with the need for ministry. I am a pastor of a very active church, and have given my life to serve Christ and my fellow man. I also have a somewhat "obsessive" personality, in that I really get into things that I enjoy. On
Though I liked GalCiv 1, I find GalCiv 2 *lots* more engaging, and more "replayable" (to coin a phrase). I also like the tech tree much better, I thought the tree in 1 was quite byzantine. I guess it ends up a matter of taste, but for me it is GalCiv 2, no contest.
I've been getting the same kind of incorrect messages, lots of 'em. I just ignore them now, but it is something that should be fixed.
I remember when E of the U used to make the entire map visible. Maybe that was in the orignal beta for DL. They lowered to 15, and I kind of like it the way it is. Actually, it seems that the AI is less concerned than I am about getting any of the wonders.
I like to have at least one minor in the game that I can make my trading partner, that way I do not lose all my trading routes when I begin the process of wiping out everyone else
I agree that the event as it now stands can be a "game ender." Perhaps I was just having a "Lemony Snicket" day, but after the pirates destroyed every single ship in the galaxy, and every starbase but one of mine, I finally built up my tech to get some ships that could at least begin to go up against them. Then I got the plague event. Discovered the cure. Then I got the economic event that inflicted a 25% tax income reduction. Then I got the disease event. Then, for some reason, my logistics wen
I'm in the same boat. Got SR2 and my GalCiv play time has taken a bit of a hit, at least for a while
I agree that the starbase aspect of the game becomes tedious as your empire expands. Another problem (short of the dreaded "paper and pencil" method) is remembering which starbases need what upgrade. Is their an available production upgrade for that mining base? Does that starbase have any defenses? Etc. etc. I end up clicking on each one to find out, or else sending a constructor there and hitting "cancel" when I realize that the only improvement I can make is to add sensors (which I don't want
It bothers me that I can't just attack minor races, but my AI opponants can You can attack minor races the same as anyone. I do it any time I want. Sometimes I like to keep one around as a trading partner, but otherwise I go for them when the time is right. I've even had minor races declare war on me (to their regret <img src="http://images.star
Also, if another race is going for a tech victory and it is obvious that they are going to beat you, you will need to take military action to take down their research ability. In a recent game, the Thalians got to within 10 weeks of tech victory so I had to change a war with the Altarians into a "holding action" while I raced across the galaxy to capture "bug" planets heavy in research. Of course, while I was at it, I went ahead and conquered their whole empire. <img src="http://images.stardock
Even if you did not disable Tech victory, you can postpone that by setting your tech spending to 0%. I had to do that once to prevent a game from ending prematurely. Usually, though, I also disable everything except conquest.
Yeah, I don't build them, and also, when I conquer a world that has an Orbital Fleet Manager, I upgrade it to something useful, rather than waste the space.
Wow, that's a tremendous game & score, congratulations. I didn't know you could resubmit a metaverse game even once, thanks CraigHB! I find it kind of boring to keep a game going longer to raise my metaverse score. On my last game, I took a Tech victory rather than spending a lot of time (and hundreds of mouse clicks) taking our three more civilizations that did not stand a chance against me. My instincts tell me that "shorter game should mean higher score," but it does not se
Have you heard the way 13 year olds talk lately? Cmon, I agree that swearing might not be appropriate on here, but to turn into Tipper Gore? Don't start requesting a politically correct forum, or you know what will happen then. Kids have worse potty mouths than most adults, and just because they may not talk to you that way doesn't mean they don't speak the words. Lighten
