DST1348's point about picking before you have seen the map is the one I keep coming back to as well, though I land somewhere slightly different on it. Committing at the start only bothers me when the commitment is invisible. If I choose a government in the first ten turns I am guessing at the galaxy, and a guess made with no information is not really a decision, it is a coin flip I have to live with for two hundred turns. Something I keep missing from GalCiv II is how much the game actually told you about a planet. You'd survey something and there would be real description attached to it, a bit of history or some detail about what was down there, and it gave the place character before you ever dropped a colony ship. Half the time I'd remember a planet from a previous game because of what it was, not because it was a class 14. GalCiv IV has plenty going on with planet features and improvements and I'm no
