It's similar to a screenshot in that way. Since the skins are available for download to be used on your system you don't need permission to show a screenshot of your desktop. A Winstyle in the .suite format would be the same thing, the only difference being that the skin artist gets his skin downloaded and applied by the program. It's all your own work, your own graphics and your own ideas. Taking the graphics from an existing skin is not designing a skin, it's called 'porting' if it's done with the full permission and approval of the original artist and the artwork is credited to the original artist. I've been having a problem on my notebook (XP) where it starts with no skin and I can't apply one. If I restart it works fine, with the skin loaded. It doesn't happen all the time but I just restart whenever it does. Have you guys tried the newsgroups for help? Sometimes it's a real effective way to get help. If you got permission (and he loved it) then of course it's okay to upload it. Include the permision he sent you in a text file and there can be no complaints. It's good that you're concerned but permission from (and credit to) the original author is all we ask.
My guess is it would have to be skinned by Windowblinds but WB can't load before you're logged on. The other XP screen is done with bitmaps, like the startup screen, so if you change the picture it changes the screen.

Sorry starone, I didn't realize what you meant. The author logo in the upload section isn't used anymore. It was for the Stardock site and was usually a GIF or a JPG like a website link button (88x31) but some were even larger. I don't believe it still does anything though. Those logos were only visible on the Windowblinds.net site...

What I meant was, if you're trying to load a Windowblinds skin, is Windowblinds already running. From your answer I'd guess no. Try loading WB so you have a skin applied before using the Skin Browser. Also try closing the Trillian popup manager before opening the Skin Browser.

hmmm... I just tried a whole bunch of different skins and apps, they all installed fine right from the browser. What apps are you trying to install a skin to and is the app running when you try to apply a skin?

I think the Component Manager problem is unrelated to the SkinBrowser one. I've been able to download skins with the browser and then apply them the normal way (ie - in the program, not from the browser). The browser has its own download path, to a downloads subdirectory in the wincustomize directory. Have you tried installing the skins from there?
