G.R.O.S.S. communication thread.

G.R.O.S.S. communication thread.

Cringe in fear do gooders. The G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy alienS) empire is now formed. In less than an hour we have jumped 95 other Pacifist Doo Gooder victim empires and lept into 40th out of 135 ranked.

We are an evil empire bent on controlling everything and showing all the other empires out there who's boss. US. Are you listening Euro-"Oh lets let everyone be a senator and give em a vote doo gooder democracy alliance?" We come for you.

For a limited time, (untill I decide otherwise) 5 Pure Evil games, (or just impressing me with your game evilness) submitted will get you a Senatorship. Later, being the evil empire pyramid scheme we are, it will take 10. Of course, being the evil empire we are, that gives you no benefits, no pay, but all the alien carnage you crave most.

Now we do realize that sometimes, you just have to fake being good. You sometimes just have to infiltrate that pacifist party. We understand. But we aren't a kinder gentler empire and don't let their pacifism go to your head. And just sometimes, you gotta let the Aliens live (where else would you find slaves for the heavy metal lava mines?)

In the future, we shall update each other in the empire via this thread, brag of our conquests, drink blood wine, and generally just poke fun (creatively and humorously) at those players whom we find to be too goody goodyish.

Our mottos.

G.R.O.S.S. Where being good is merely a temporary strategy.

Just win baby.

Here's your ration of skin you do gooder wimp Drengin slime. Now get back to work

EBZeroMatrix you have been made a senator.

I repeat. Cringe in fear, we come for you.

The thread has been too quiet... hope everyone is doing okay. I'm sorry I missed our brief return to #1. It looks like the Fellowship added another one - strangely enough his roleplaying indicates that he seems to realize this is a space game so maybe he'll leave...

Anyway, I'm in the middle of an interested game. The minors, Torians and Arceans are all out -- and the Yor are actually doing okay. The Drendin must have started a war with both them and the Altarians because each just conquered an Drendin planet. Surprisely, the Yor are now the strongest of the bunch. I'm almost rooting for them as last to be exterminated...

Have a great weekend everyone,

Cypher

Cypher for some reason, there has arison, an incompatibility between my puter and this site. The data stream keeps getting cut off. Takes about 5 minutes to post at times. But usually when I first sign on It doesn't kick in for about 30 minutes.. So I've been scarce.

And I agree cypher. We are still the #1 in game theme empire. We have a couple on vacation. I was sick, A couple left. And we're still recovering from the brew ha ha. But it is to our credit, that we are hanging in despite the big disadvantage I and others have sticking with the 1.05. Carry on Gentlemen.

Yup. Well done. Soon as I figure out the incompatibility with this site (no one else seems to have the massive slow down problems I am here), I'll post more often.

Gunner, You need to hit the recruiting trail again. hehe.

I used to post rankings, but that would take me over 2 hours under current circumstances. Blech. Once I get the probs worked out. I'll get back to it.

It just counts my evil games, not my good or neutral ones on the evil list. I've been also noticing something is wrong with my allignment generator. I've been getting chaotic goods even when I finished up with Morality 45. Don't know what the prob is. Probably some minor corruption in something somewhere. But the game is still otherwise working, albeit with more and more and more crashes and slowdowns.

Has anyone else noticed that. We've been on this version awhile. I've noticed that for me, When I first get a version, I have few problems. But as I play more and more and more in that version, the problems and crashes and slow downs seem to get worse and worse, untill the next upgrade. Curious. Very curious.

Sorry to hear that Captain. I've only had about 3 CTD in all my games(about 16 or so).

Yes I noticed that. But most don't seem to make that connection that an empire based on a completely different fantasy subject is out of place in a space game. I for one think the LOOK AT THAT BARD PILOT THE SPACESHIP!!! angle is a reach. But he also said something about making a stand. What that means, I don't know. But in the past it has usually meant we gave em the beatdown and they are looking for payback. Not that they ever get it. :)

I shall shortly have my game from last night finished(after I feed the little pirates) and then it's off to try a tiny/maso/abundant. Please help with initial settings and beginning strategy musts. Mid game is good too. LOL Anyway, I'd like to win it and any help conquering those treacherous Drengins would be appreciated. I'll even throw in some toasters. Or I could take the invasion to them presonally by loading up my Halo(xbox game) and play it online.

Hiya! You're right about it being quiet, and not just here. Pontius - are agents from the Geektrix messing with your 'puter? And to be honest, the 'brew ha ha' does seem to have percolated through the 'Verse; everyone seems to be keeping their heads down. The only way empires shift now is with current players moving around - I see very few new players. Re the 1.05 - I just upgraded to the beta and I feel my scores are WORSE. Clearly, the rejigging is aimed at Maso players only. Solitair has been playing brilliantly of late - 20,000 pts per Maso TINY! Once the cap is lifted, I reckon Ray will be getting 40-50,000 per Maso gigantic, and that's game over.

Anyway, keep the faith!

[fade in: a bunch of kids at a Jedi training school, learning lightsaber skills.]

[deep narrator's voice:]
All across the Metaverse, the empires expand their influence.

[fade to a wizard in a tower, practising a spell.]

These factions plot against each other, and grow more powerful every day.

[fade to a bunch of farmers, tilling their crops.]

But there is one group that every empire fears.

[one of the farmers looks up at the sky nervously.]

They are... the pirates. These are their stories.

[cue back to the tower - the wizard hears a disturbance and looks up, just in time to see a bunch of massive pirates crash through the tower's windows. One of them hurtles towards the camera and we cut to black as he hits.]

[Get some loud drum music going - every drum beat brings up another letter of this word on the screen:]

P I R A T E S

[fade in: view of space, with lots of ships moving past. The camera zooms in on an old corvette.]

subtitle:
Pirate Corvette C-85
On patrol in sector (3,1)

[Cut to inside the corvette. It's a four-seater model, the camera view's from the front passenger seat, looking at the driver. The driver's wearing a fancy red great-coat and a triangular pirate hat.]

subtitle:
Ralph Bloodnut
Patrol Commander

"I've been on this beat for five years. It's a rough neighbourhood, I won't deny that. And a lot of pirates are happier working on the dreadnought fleets, the ones that capture pleasure palaces and party on for weeks at a time. They're the ones you always see on GNN. But I'm not in this job for publicity. I'm here to make a difference."

[The camera turns to the back seats. First, it looks at a tubby guy, who seems heavier than a dreadnought.]

subtitle:
Dennis Brewbelly
Ship's Gunner

"I wanted to sign up after all the ads on TV. Be all you can be, all that good stuff. But the Army said my body-fat index was too high, so I became a pirate instead. I like this corvette job - it's better than a starfighter detail, at least. There are overlords out there who are quite happy to put a pilot in a starfighter, launch him into orbit, and just keep him inside for years at a time. Do you have any idea how cramped those things are? At least here, I get some leg room."

[The camera pans over to a tall, lanky guy holding a spyglass.]

subtitle:
Johnny Farscope
Ship's Lookout

"I used to be an astronomer, you know. No, I'm not kidding. I used to sit in an observatory all day and catalog star clusters. It caused a lot of problems at home - my wife called me a useless nerd. Out here, as a pirate, I get to feel like I'm doing some real macho stuff. During the quiet times, I can keep up my old hobbies, and try out some new ones, like perving on passing ships. Plus, there's no more problems at home. The wench I scored two months ago is much more fun than my old wife."

The corvette's engine suddenly made a couple kicking sounds, then returned to normal.

"Only thing I don't like about corvette duty is some of the old ships we get assigned."

Bloodnut looked over his shoulder.

"Oh, sure, it's an old Earth model, not very high tech. But pirates are supposed to be low tech, and we've got a reputation for improvising! If a pirate from six hundred years ago got the chance to use a flying pirate ship, with air-con and all, he'd jump at the chance."

"Bunny ho!" screamed the lookout.

The pirates looked, and saw a massive freighter slowly cruising past in the distance.

"Our first catch of the day - let's pull them over." said Bloodnut.

subtitle:
10:46am - Target of Opportunity

As the pirate corvette kicked into high gear and entered the space lanes, a red pirate flag popped up on its roof. Brewbelly and Farscope, their cutlasses drawn, stuck their heads out the passenger windows and started screaming "Arr! ARR! Arr! ARR!" in a beautiful tenor-bass duet. Most ships heeded the warning and got out of the corvette's way. Very soon, it was tailing the freighter.

Bloodnut waved the other two pirates away from the windows and spoke into the intercom.

"Freighter Marklar, this is GROSS. Pull over and shut down your engines."

The freighter fired its afterburners and slowly began to pull away from the pirate corvette.

"You see this? People around here, they just have no respect for authority. Brewie, would you do the honours?"
"Way ahead of you, boss."

While Brewbelly talked, he pulled a rocket launcher out from next to his seat. He opened his window, leaned out, and grinned as he let the rocket loose. It hit the rear section of the freighter, and blew away its engines, along with most of the lowest deck.

Bloodnut commented, "We really don't like violence, you know. It's just a tool of the trade."

The corvette tractored the freighter for a moment, to stabilize it, then pulled alongside. As Brewbelly wheeled out a minigun from a ceiling mount to cover the freighter, Bloodnut rolled down his window, and tapped on the freighter's window with his blaster.

After a few moments, the freighter captain rolled down his window, and a Torian head popped out.

"Licence and cargo manifest, please." demanded Bloodnut in a no-nonsense tone of voice.

As the Torian dug around his cockpit, he quietly mumbled some alien gibberish.

"Is your universal translator broken?" asked the cameraman.

"UTs are great, especially when I'm trying to pick up at nightclubs, but I don't use them on the job. Out here, it's all about respect. You respect them, they respect you, and everyone gets to walk away in one piece." explained the pirate captain.

Eventually, the Torian found his docs, and handed them to the pirate. Bloodnut scrolled through the manifest, then stopped at one item.

"This manifest says you're got 50 Rigellian fire-stones on board. Is that right?"

The alien swung his head from side from side and kept talking gibberish.

"A friend's holding it for you?"

The alien nodded vigourously.

Bloodnut sighed. "Look, I appreciate how difficult this is for you, but I really do have to take those fire-stones. If you have a problem with my conduct, you're welcome to file a complaint with GROSS Command."

The Torian waved his arms around and started screaming in a grating high-pitched voice. Brewbelly and Farscope covered their ears, while Bloodnut shot the alien, grabbed his body, and threw it out into space.

"What a waste." said Bloodnut ruefully. "If he hadn't made up stories about his family needing food and clothes, he'd probably still be alive. But I can't stand liars."

He leaned into the freighter cockpit and looked aft.

"Hello? HELLOO? Anyone home? If I don't see someone in thirty seconds, I'm rolling a grenade down there..."

A Torian head suddenly poked into the cockpit. Bloodnut waved him forward.

"Come on, little fella. Step up to the plate, don't be afraid. You know what? You people have given us a lot of trouble. I think we're going to have to impound your freighter. Now, if you people behave yourselves, we might let you live."

The Torian got on his knees and said something.

"The rocket launcher took out half your escape pods? How many extra people have you got?"

The Torian pointed to himself, then held up three fingers.

"Fine, get three of your buddies up here."

The Torian yelled out, and three more appeared, grinning like idiots.

"Brewbelly, if you would be so kind..."

The gunner immediately arced up with his minigun. By the time he was finished, there wasn't much left of the Torians.

"Was that necessary?" asked the cameraman.

"Let me tell you something. Things always get a bit chaotic when we show up, and running short on escape pods is sure to drive people into a panic. You know what people do when they panic? They break stuff. And guess whose paycheck that comes out off? That's right, mine. Those Torians were dead anyway, we just made it easier on them. And the more stuff we get from each freighter, the fewer freighters we'll have to loot to meet our quota. Do you see now, how kind it was to shoot them?"

Bloodnut sighed, and watched as the freigher's escape pods were launched.

"I guess it takes time for civvies to understand our way of thinking. There's more to the pirate life than what you see in the movies, you know. I'm not a stereotype."

"Are you sure you wouldn't be happier in another empire?" asked the cameraman.

"I thought about the other empires, a long time ago, but I'll be a pirate till the day I die. They'd have us doing things like memorizing arcane spells in old towers, growing crops on a mid-western farm, or putting up republican posters everywhere. With the pirates, I have the chance to really get out there in the community and make a difference. I'm a people person, you know."

As the corvette cruised off, freighter in tow, the same drum music from the opening credits kicked in, but Bloodnut cut it off.

"That's the other good thing about having my own ship. I get to pick my theme song."

He took a deep breath, and started crooning:

"It's still the same old story,
a fight for loot an' glory,
A case of do or die,
the world will always welcome pirates,
As time goes by . . ."

As he sang, and the other pirates hummed in the background, the pirate corvette sailed off into the sunset.

It seemed about time for the Spymaster to take some pot shots from his favorite turret. Taxes paid, and at painful for the first time. There wasn't much to gain out of tech whoring in this last game because of the difficulty level, so I went kind of old school and stuck with what I knew best: have the most military power and most colonies any which way you can and then decide how to end it after grinding the aliens down.

In my case, it was a two alien alliance. I would have preferred a four alien alliance, but the Torians and Altarians got culture bombed into oblivion and a horde of my ships crashed down upon the resisting Arceans and took them off the map in six turns. Not an alpha strike, I know, but one of my allies kind of started the war a bit early. I was trying to butter up the Arceans to make it a total alliance, but I allied too soon and the Yor were a bit anxious to go to war and I was called into it. Oh, well. No matter. I earned my booze for the night. :)

Hail Spymaster! I too, have just done the business at Painful - and scored not much more than you did on a small map. Man, the more I play, the higher the level, the less I score >:( Do you usually look for an alliance victory at that level?
Quack, very disturbing! LOL I can see why everyone joins the fairies, I mean, the Fellowship, in order to get at the pirates.

I just played 2 or 3 maso small maps. An interesting experience, not being able to trade for cash. Does tend to focus one's mind on what each civ is doing and strategic alliances. I played with few planets and every civ on chaotic evil, and then a game with every civ on neutral.

bpleshek: how did your maso tiny go? You haven't posted it? Don't go with abundant: if the aliens get too many planets it is too hard to keep up.

The weekend is over here. My football team had an unexpected victory on Sunday (a one in 5 years victory) so I'm chuffed. Cheers all!

Pontius: You know you deserve a new Dell!

Your kids don't need to go to College. Anyway, isn't tertiary education free there? (That was a joke: TANSTAAFL.)

Hope you and the family are better. It sounds like you are now. I've been meaning to say that I read The Princess Bride when it was first published. When you mentioned the book I tried to find my copy, but I haven't unpacked my books yet after my move. So I went and bought the 25th anniversary edition so I can re-read it. Gee, Goldman wrote some scripts didn't he! His works reads like a whos who.

I want to be in the top 25 when you next post the scores too. Cheers all.

BP. Frogboys official position on normal was "not much of a change" But in the same line he mentions the multiplier went from 4.1 to 3.6 or so on it. so it would be a bit of a reduction. And since scores are relative his "I didn't hurt the normal one bit" is invalid. Raising one without raising the other is hurting the one not raised. It's sort of like the nfl saying "Well we didn't want to hurt the defense just help the offense by allowing forward motion before the snap of the ball."

Killa: I don't think it's my puter. It's not the quickest thing. But since I'm on dialup, A faster puter makes no difference web wise. I'm already beyond dial up speed in the processing dept. Everything is testing fine on my end. It's slow at the other end or between us. Or maybe my isp changed something such that an incompatibility has arisen. Used to have that problem with ao hell all the time. Less so with my isp now.

Wombie: The only level that got a big boost in scores was maso. Ironically though, 1.09 makes maso easier according to some of the maso players. And the reality is, the harder trades for money was achieved by what in my opinion is a cheat. It's not any smarter. In fact it's dumber. You can offer one civ 80 bux now for its 10 bux now and it will say no. You can offer it everything you have plus the 80 bux for 10 bux and it will still say no. So in fact, what the devs have done is run ripshod over simple economics. A good's (or money's) relative value in exchange should not fluctuate depending on whether one is buying or selling that good. But here we have a system that has been tweaked to the point of stupidity. I'd actually rather see a civ thinking humans so polluted, they won't trade with em at all. At least that would be a realistic possibility.

Do you know, I never thought of it like that! You are absolutely right! The AI has been tweaked to do outrageously stupid things solely in order to make the game harder at different levels. Yet the game was marketed (I know: marketing hype) on the basis that the AIs would play as if they were people.

Now multi-player Galciv would be amazing (if you could play on a LAN and not on the internet). Just imagine Galciv with the aliens actually playing realistically. Mind you, there would be so many 'surprise' attacks that it would get very frustrating very quickly.
