GOG, RIP

Good Old Games, or GOG, closed its doors. I bought many games from them and will miss their presence.

It hasn't closed its doors yet but the site is down now. However; there are rumours that it is just a bizarre PR stunt and they are simply leaving 'Beta.'

Wow - I guess I got MoM from them just in time? Must have been fate.

I hope it's just a PR stunt. I just discovered the place, but might peruse more games when I have some spare bucks to throw around.

I think it's very likely that it's just a PR stunt. Quite bold and strange one, bound to piss many people off.

Just learn how to configure DosBox.

Those games are abandonware mostly, it's not fair to charge for them

Are they abandonware if they are legally sold/distributed? Because that doesn't sound like very abandoned to me.

Well, both Master of Magic, and Master of Orion 1 are abandonware

The wording on the site certainly does sound like they are going to put something different up instead.

Doesn't fit: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=abandonware

And surely NOT this: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/abandonware.html

Its not abandonware if its up for sale.

How does it not fit? If the original publisher doesnt sell it anymore its abandonware - maybe GOG/Impulse are simply selling something that is not claimed by anyone anymore? Such as how someone might pick up trash, clean it up, and sell it. I'm not sure, but I could imagine this scenario.

Sticking to the first definition of the UrbanDictionary:

software that is no longer sold or supported by the original publisher / developer, often found as free downloads on the internet because it cannot be obtained elsewhere. Not legal, but often seen as morally acceptable because the company that made it is no longer selling the title, nor releasing it as freeware, therefore abandonware is "keeping the game alive", so to speak.

I'm quite sure that Atari made some bucks from MoM, as holder of the rights, sales in GoG.

Atari owns the rights to both and both are currently for sale. There is no excuse for pirating them, whatever you may call it.

Where is Master of Magic currently for sale?

Since Atari holds the rights I stand corrected in my previous belief (makes no difference to me, I still have the original floppy disks of both those games).

Just because the shop is not owned by the publisher, does not mean that the publisher does not sell it anymore. And no, you cannot just take "trash" software and sell it. the copyright holder has to agree otherwise you would get sued. you get the license to use the software from the publisher and not from the shop.

Noooo I was about to buy (another) copy of homm3 from them :(

I guess I can wait...

I think Abandonware is a myth.

Copyright on old games is the same as nuclear waste, it takes thousands of years to stop being a problem.

So um ... did GOG.com have a legal right to sell MoM or not??

They did and still do, likely ill-advised marketing stunt notwithstanding.

BTW, Master of Orion is on Impulse right now

Yes, GOG has the rights to sell all of the games that they offer. It's a legitimate business run by CDProjekt, the makers of The Witcher.

And it's confirmed today that this was a publicity stunt. They are relaunching, out of beta, Thursday. With new releases such as Baldur's Gate.

The question is, will Master of Magic ever come to Impulse?

Well, it turns out it was a marketing stunt. I'm glad it wasn't real, but I hate being fooled.
