problem with ATI graphics card

hi there!
well, i got my brand new laptop with ATI mobility radeon 9000. there is a problem.
when i play a game, sometimes the computer hangs up. i am not able to continur and i have to shut down the system. what is the problem?
these are my system specs:
P4 2.8 GHZ,
256 MB DDR SDRAM
30GB ultra ata/100 hdd
DVD,CDRW
15'' XGA TFT lCD.
Windows XP.
Acer Aspire 1604LC...

May not be the drivers. Have you tried Windows update? There's an update for some game video issues which can stop a game responding.

thanks...i am trying that now...

over heating? and memory leaks? well, my processor doesnt get too hot!

and maybe i should try installing direct x 9...it might help. but i am on a 56K! , so, downloading might give me a nightmare!

Howdy! If You have an ATI video card (8500, 9000, 9500 and -9700, 9800- less), throw it out. It's just like AIDS for the video card. It WILL ALWAYS BE SO!!!

I think Jafo was saying increasing it to 512 would help you alot. If it is a Laptop I feel sorry for you as you are stuck with ATI.

Pathetic and entirely unfounded. Sounds like sour grapes because ATI have finally pulled ahead of the competition with their products. There are far less compatibility issues with ATI products now than there are with those from nVidia, and the performance levels and stability are just a little higher too. I used to loathe my old Radeon card when ATI's driver releases were few and far between, but now with my new 9700 Pro I'm glad I didn't go for the competition.

Depending on the manufacturer of the laptop and the type of memory it uses, it's entirely possible to upgrade the memory. Check it out with a qualified PC repair shop, as the manufacturers will always tell you what they want you to hear in order to keep your money going to them.

I doubt the processor is overheating, as unlike desktop machines laptops are designed with the performance and heat levels of a particular processor in mind.

I'm not aware of any problems with NOLF2 with the Mobility graphics processors, but it might be worth checking out the forums at Rage3D ( http://www.rage3d.com ) to see if anyone else is having similar problems.

Have you downloaded the latest drivers as suggested by IPlural and made sure you remove all traces of previous driver versions before installing them? 9 times out of 10 you'll find that the latest drivers have fixed a known issue with a particular game. I could be wrong, but I thought the Mobility drivers were included as part of the standard Catalyst releases. Don't take my word for that though, and make sure you have the correct ones.

Speaking of unfounded criticism, are you aware Kona that Pentium processors are actually technologically superior to the AMD equivalents? I'm an AMD user myself, and 99.9% of the time it's not a problem, but certain processor functions which are present in the more expensive P4s are emulated by AMDs. They're functions which are rarely used by mainstream applications though, so it very rarely causes any trouble. The main benefits of AMD processors over Intel ones aren't increased stability or performance, but rather a much better price to performance ratio for mainstream desktop users.
